How long should it take?

My lab puppy is just coming up for 13 weeks and he is getting very good at going when he is let out in the garden and when out for little walks.

However I feel that I really need eyes in the back of my head and have occasions when I miss him doing it. He always goes on the paper I have down for him (although sometimes he does only get his fron feet on, but he is trying!!!

) and only ever does 1 little wee at night, but during the day he seems to wee every 5 mins and I manage to catch him most times but not every single time.

He is also doing most of his poo's outside but again occasionaly I miss one. He seems to hold both until I am say in the loo or shower then does it when I'm not around

.

Is this going to cause problems house training him or will he eventually get the idea?

If I can leave the back door open he is fine and goes outside everytime, but when we are having out typical english summer

like today and its raining then this is obviously not possible,

At what age can I expect him to be able to 'hold on' till he gets let out?

It's different for different dogs. I had one dog who rarely messed in the house and the last rottie seemed to get the hang and then regressed!! It'll happen, you're doing all the right things. One day soon all the mess will be a distant memory...until the next pup comes along!!

Depends on the dog, but I would say that 13 weeks is still quite young. Personally I do not use paper as I do think it takes them a bit longer to un-learnt it. If you possibly can take him out every single hour to make sure he has the opportunity to go and there are no accidents in the house, but it is tough to do! Overnight toilet breaks are quite normal for a while longer (one puppy I had kept the overnight toilet wake up call for 6 months even though he never soiled in the house during the day! He just could not go 8 hours!).
