I think the lady of the staff we were going to rehome is going to back out - her daughter is disraught!

I've spoken to a few people who said that maybe it's better to get a puppy - that way we can train it how we want to train it. I'm really anxious about rescuing a staff due to the backgrounds some of them have.

There are occasions when she'd have to be alone for a few hours but i'd always make sure I had a reliable dog sitter/walker to check on her if that was going to be the case.

What are your thoughts?

My only advice is that if you want a rescue puppy you often need to get in there quickly as they get snapped up.

Although the rescue centre we got our puppy from seemed to get a lot of puppies in regularly as a lot of dogs they rescued came over from Ireland and there was a bit of a waiting list. When we got Darcy there were 4 other little pups wanting homes and 4 or 5 pups on their way in. I could have taken them all!

Yep realise that which is why we're taking 2 weeks off to settle a dog in and atleast start the training! We have a secure garden and can let it have the garden during the day (and kitchen) but i've heard good things about staffs and toilet training....ie they're quite bright and pick things up if trained properly.

REalise it will be hard work.....

There's a reputable breeder 5 mins drive from us so would probably buy one.

REalise it's not ideal as alot of staffs need rehoming but I just wouldn't feel confident rehoming a staff that I didn't know it's background - and they seem easy dogs to scar mentally from what I've heard/seen.....think Silver Florin will back me up there!

You know what will be right for you. I don't see why you wouldn't manage a pup, especially as you are making arrangements for the little fella while you are out during the day and as you say it is only on occasion.

My sister-in-law rescued a pup last year. Crow was ten weeks when rescued, and came from a litter that had been abandoned at the side of the road. Aside from a few weeks of being a bit timid, she has settled in beautifully--no aggression, housetrained easily etc.

I *know* everyone has different experiences of rescuing adult dogs, but my own attempt last year went very wrong (dog attacked Stella twice and bit two people; he went to an only-dog home in the end). Part of the issue is having the rescue group be very honest with you--the one we dealt with wasn't--but you should go with what you feel comfortable with. If that's a pup, go with a pup.
