Puppy Lab Pulling On Lead badly

Hey guys!! I have a 4 1/2 month old Lab and he is wonderfull in everyway apart from when we are walking him. He pulls constanly, away from us and he is a big chap and very strong. When he is off the lead he follows us where ever we go and comes to call, when we are in a field.

Just wonderd what do you think i can do to stop him from pulling?? We attend puppy training classes jsut wonderd what your thoughts were??xxx
 
Treats (low fat) & praise.
Is he pulling in front of you or to the side..?
If in front, a sharp no & turn & walk in the opposite direction, with a treat to guide his nose.
If he's pulling to the side, just stop & stand still 'til he returns to your side & then treat & praise & give your command...close or heel, or whatever.
A "special" toy that he just has when you walk him might help...an old sock stufed to make a retrieve roll or similar.
What does the puppy class instructor think.?
 
hey!!! he pulls in every direction, if u are standing still he will sit by your side, but then if something catches hisd eye he will get up and pull.

We are going to talk to her about it tonight?xx
 
I was unable to use any from of collar on my mastiff but found a "Lupi" worked really well as it acts on the chest rather than the neck. But it doesnt take away the need for training.
Its just trying to train a mastiff without a collar is pretty difficult! He learnt not to pull within 2 walks!
 
Our Lab pup did that. First of all we were told to not let him off the lead until we could control him on the lead. Secondly get a slip lead. When he starts pulling, change direction quickly giving him a sharp tug and then change back again. This will teach him that he doesn't actually know where he's going and that his attention needs to be on you. We also had a little stick and as soon as his nose got too far in front it got a little tap - in the ed all we had to do was raise the stick and he knew what he was supposed to do!
 
We've had retrievers who've all been difficult to lead train. Best result was with a halti headcollar type of lead. It doesn't engage unless they pull and they don't tend to after a very short while.

Once they understand what's going on we used a second collar and lead and worked off that.

took a little while but worked.
