Puppy prices

Just a general observation as I am not (keep telling myself that), not looking at puppies for the medium term future....next year some time maybe.

Just looking at puppy ads locally and, although we are in West Wales so some lower prices might be expected, I was pleasantly to see pups for sale for what I would think of as reasonable prices. Just in case I was to look further afield, I was wondering whether the lockdown jump in prices is now over? What do people think?

Having been scanning the various sites such as Pets4Homes, preloved, freeads etc I am seeing a wide range of prices from sensible to ridiculously high even for older rehomes. So a lot of optimists still out there.

A friend got a whatsapp message last week about some collie pups that were free to a good home advertised through word of mouth, so I'd say prices have crashed

Interesting - I was seeing a lot of pups - from labs to poodle crosses advertised between £500-700
There are still a couple of them up for over £1,500 but not many. Looks like the bubble finally popped

The bubble has very much has burst. I am now seeing full litters of puppies way beyond 8 weeks old unsold, and breeders not having the space for the growing puppies available. Some breeders have ceased mating in the last 6 months.

The shelters are all full in my area (middle England) too and the wardens are very busy collecting strays and chucked out dogs. We predicted this situation occurring and sadly we are right. We are currently housing dogs outside of the County which isn't tenable for long.

I think we will see many more abandoned dogs as the country goes into recession and the cost of living through the colder months becomes difficult for many. The price of animal food is rising as quickly as human food if not more quickly.

I idley (sp) cast my around various sites for Shitsu puppies recently. Still very expensive (also in West Wales)

I think you're right - round here the prices are still very high for things like Frenchies and Corgis.
I wonder if corgis will be high for a while due to the death of the Queen

I have been looking at prices in S Yorkshire and they definitely are lower than they were a few months ago. Even nicely bred from health tested parents are not selling as well, and are often still for sale at 10-12 weeks.

A lot of dogs 6 months old and more are up for sale too. I suppose the owners are trying to get some money back from the inflated price they paid rather than contact rescue centres.

A local rescue was saying a dog was tied to its gate when they were closed. The dog has health issues which may be a major reason why it was left.

Yep it was predictable as hell. And sadly the dogs homes will become more and more full and more and more dogs will be pts that can't find homes as the volume of rehoming is just not sustainable considering the volume of dogs available.

So sad and so easily avoided but for peoples greed during lockdown.

I don’t know how actively you are looking but I have just received an email from work about a 15 month old shih-tzu looking for a new home - Telford, Shropshire area. Castrated and vaccinated. ?

So sad and so easily avoided but for peoples greed during lockdown.

The reason was not greed. It was people with disposable income and no shortage of time stuck at home deciding that they would spend money on puppies, horses and other luxury items to enjoy in their newly found different lifestyle. Demand for these items pushed prices and demand up and up. The suppliers of these items saw an opportunity and grasped it big time.

The purchasing of an item, be it breathing or not, is driven by demand and only worth what people will pay. The demand for bikes went crazy along with the price for instance. The bike is in the shed now but the puppies are not so fortunate.

They’ve definitely crashed. I was looking about a year and half ago as my parents had just lost our family Staffie and her Labrador brother was miserable without her. Prices were still outrageous, and we paid well over the odds to get a pup to keep him company. My sister had also bought a WCS puppy a few months before that.

When OH and I just got our Lab puppy, there was a world of difference. Prices seemed to have more than halved from where they’d been previously, despite Labs usually commanding a higher price than Staffies. We ended up paying a lot less than we’d been expecting to.

Interesting.

Thanks, but it was just idle browsing. OH is not ready yet. But 15 months old would have been perfect.

That’s what we said. Then, oops! Given you‘re the one that does the dog walking, do you have more of a say?

Rescues and pounds are now completely full here in Ireland, as predicted during all the madness of COVID lockdown breeding and buying. I think you could probably find almost all of the popular breeds lying about unwanted in every corner of Ireland. Heartbreaking but totally expected, sadly many will be euthanasiad.

Considering how many dogs are ending up in rescue now, whatever dogs home I look at has only a few up for rehoming and most of those need specific types of homes. You would think there would be long lists of available dogs but no. That includes places like Battersea and Dogs Trust. Also these days you mostly have to fill in a form to specify what you are looking for and they will match you with a dog. When you think how many of us go out with one idea in our minds as to what we want and come back with the opposite this is a very restrictive process.

I'd love another dog, but I think that King Kevin Kat would promptly decamp permanently to his private yacht, and I can't afford to keep two vessels seaworthy, dry and warm!
The Kat's yacht is just up the central pontoon from us, in a dreadful abandoned state, and I'm sure it will sink at some point. The owners haven't been near or by for years, but are apparently still paying the moorings . . .
If they ever reappear, I'm sure K will reward them with a ratant en croute.

I saw two separate posts for young lurchers in desperate need of a new home within the last hour on fb.

One of them had nothing wrong at all, just wasnt coping with owners at work all day but sounded to be a lovely dog.
