So, we've had 'Marley' for 3 months now (shes 5 months old) and she is a real sweetheart. She's a Lab cross Border Collie and is very clever and obident.

The problem i'm having is she picks up *everything* from the floor and tries to eat it. This includes (but is not limited to) rubbish, bits of food, wood, stones....even horse and dog pooh (ick ick ick). If i tell her to leave it alone she will drop it, but it is impossible to keep an eye on her ALL the time, especially when we are at the yard and she has free run (shes brilliant with the horses). But when i have a puppy come home with pooh breath i just dispear....

Any ideas on how i can stop this??

I can cope with a few things but eating pooh makes me feel sick....and i dont want her to hurt herself.

Finn eats poo, Tinks eats poo, Cane eats poo.. they all eat poo!!

Just think of it as grass - as that IS all it is... (horse poo I mean)

I know it's not nice but they do love it!!

She may be teething at that age.... Mine was worst ever chewer, shite eater around that time and now it's stopped bar the shite eating!! ick ick ick ick.... he's 7 months now but was horrid at 5/6 months... he now got lovely set of softer white teeth (no razor sharps!!!!)

Give her ample of chews like pigs ear, raw hides, kong filled with goodies... warning extra care taken while eating pig ear/rawhides as they tend to choke if got small.

Good luck...

Personally, I wouldn't allow a puppy of that age to wander unsupervised at a yard. It is fine in an enclosed garden, but other than that I would keep her on a lead or shut in a stable. In the garden you can be vigilant about what is on the ground. All dogs eat horse poo, but it is not nice either socially, or when they spew large quantities back up. If it comes from a horse that has recently been wormed, it can be fatal.

Sooty - She isn't unsupervised as such, the whole yard is enclosed and when she is there we keep all gates closed so she has no where to go and she is never left on her own. All horses are on same worming programe as its a professional yard so i know exactly whats happening in that respect, even though i have never known horse pooh be fatal to a dog after worming the horse.

She does exactly the same in the garden, picking up stones, leaves general dirt etc. And will do on the lead. She might be only five months but always comes when called so being off the lead at the yard isn't really the issue. (Shut in the stable she tends to eat the bedding....any odd bits of pooh in there....or anything else she can get her paws on!)

I just dislike telling her every two minutes to 'leave' an object alone, although she will, if asked.

Aw she sounds very obedient! Morgan had a massive fascination with sticks, stones and bits of hedge at that age, and used to gather them up in a pile on the garden bench. Have you considered a basket muzzle? They are very good as the dog can still sniff, drink and pant while wearing one; it just can't eat! Maybe fatal was an exaggeration - dangerous would have been better!

Agree with Sooty about worming... although apparently the bigger problem is if dogs regularly eat horse poo from horses that have been on antibiotics (creates resistance).

My puppy is nearly 5 months now - he used to pick up stones, but has stopped now his adult teeth are coming through..

He is a pain for picking up bits of litter tho - but he will leave it if I tell him to - and I have noticed that he is now getting less bad - think you have to persevere with the leave command until they stop bothering in the first place!
