Can anyone recommend a puppy trainer in the West Chilt/Pulborough area?

A friend has recently bought an Akita, now 12 weeks old. They've started weekly puppy training with someone, but tbh she sounds like she doesn't really know what she's doing  So I said I'd ask you knowledgeable lot for some recommendations :)

They want someone who will go to them on a weekly basis & teach them as well as the puppy as they're first time dog owners.

Thank you all in advance :D

I think their vets would be a good person to ask, they usually run puppy classes from there.

An Akita is not for novice owners so its very important they get the training right.

I agree about the novice owner thing Dobiegirl :) That's why I want to help them by getting a good trainer recommendation.

They're not actually taking her to puppy classes, but have a trainer going to their house weekly to do it (don't think money's a problem for them!)

Anyone else know anyone who they can recommend?

Brenda cox is in steyning (maybe a bit far) but she is really knowlegable. she must have around 10 dogs; and as thier all very well trained you can decide for yourself.

Thanks Imogen, I think Steyning's OK - have googled her & will give them the contact.

What worried me was that the person they're using was teaching a recall, and the puppy completely ignored it - and the trainer said "Oh, how strange, that's never happened before". They've only had the puppy for 2 weeks.

check on the KC website they will have a list of trainers that run the good cit scheme make sure she checks them out to find out which methods they use as it can be a bit hit and miss

Thanks horseloaner - I was really hoping to get personal recommendations as they already have a (registered) trainer, but just because someone's passed a course, doesn't mean they really know what they're doing - similarly to BHS AI's :)

I think it would be a big mistake to miss out puppy classes, that pup needs to be socialised more importantly than training at this age. Akitas can have dog aggression so socialisation from an early age with other dogs and people is essential.

Agree, pup needs to be out and about, meeting other dogs and getting socialised and seen in different situations, not getting home visits - home visits only help with home issues.

Thanks, I will mention it to them, but the pup's only 12 weeks old, so may not have had all her jabs yet? Not sure, I've never had a puppy myself & didn't ask.

As suggested not a novice breed and one you cannot afford to not socialise or make mistakes with, puppy classes are a must, no point in home visits, the pup needs to get out there.
Im a huge akita fan but they are not for the fainted hearted so indeed get your friend into the nearest/best puppy class and stick with the training till adult hood, recall may never be a strong point as akitas are a breed renound for "no recall regardless of age" they have a strong hunt instinct. My is never on a lead but I worked very hard with her from the get go which was harder as she was a rescue an not a puppy.
