I have read many posts about how to house train your puppy. I have tried many times but to no avail! Today my 6 month old puppy went for a half hour run around the field with my older dog, came home and messes and peed in my house. He doesnt seem to learn, he is quite a timid dog so i dont want to shout at him. I am constantly putting him in the garden even standing outside with him! Any suggestions as he isnot improveing!

Hi
we've had our puppy 3 weeks now, got him from the dogs trust, we had to got to a puppy class before he came home, anyway they advised ignoring the pup if he messed inside just clean it up and dont respond to the dog but when he goes to the toilet outside make a big fuss of him run around the garden like a loon well we felt like idiots doing this but he very rarely has an accident in the house and whines at the door when he needs to go and hes just turned 3 months old. Dogs crave human attention and negative attention is better than none so they soon get the message that going outdoors gets what they want from us.

OP, Im on the run now, just gobbing food down and I'm off again but will be back later and can add loads onto the above reply to help you crack the toilet training :)

He's a young lad and excited being out and about playing.....going to the toilet is low down on his agenda at the moment! Much more exciting playing with your mate when you're out and about!

Soooo........go back to treating him like an 8 week old puppy for a short time. Take him out after every sleep, every meal and every play. Stay with him and praise like there's no tomorrow when he performs. Try putting everything on cue as well, so when he does urinate it's 'good wee wees'...or whatever! Yes, you do sound like a t*t, but eventually they make the association and I can now take my lot out, say 'go wee wees' and they all perform pronto without having to hang around for half an hour or so! (Much appreciated on a cold winters night!)

Clean up the spot he has soiled thoroughly indoors so that there is no smell of urine that could possibly attract him again. Take him to the same spot in your garden each time so the smell of the urine will help him associate with what you want of him. As he gets older, you could even try the 'Pee sticks' they sell at PAH.......never used them myself but some swear by them.

In the meantime, praise the good and ignore the bad. If you are tempted to shout at him for a mistake, shout at yourself or rub your own nose in it BECAUSE YOU MISSED THE SIGNS of him needing to go out!!! :D If it helps, keep a pee and poo diary.............it helps to spot patterns!

Good luck.

You need to either have your dog tethered to you or in a crate.

So you come home from you walk and the dog goes in the crate for 20 minutes then you take him outside if he pee's act like he just did the best thing ever and give him a high value treat that he only gets for peeing outside (we used chicken).

Come back in and the dog much be either attached to you or in the crate at all times!

If he pees clean it up with an enzyme cleaner. Think happy thoughts or he will know your pissed.

Next roll up a newspaper and hit your self over the head with it because you either missed the signs or he was not be supervised.

Out every 30 minutes.
Out right after food or water
Water comes up at least 2 hours before bed time.

What KLH said re crate, you def need to indroduce an aid when he is left alone, or a contained area if you can make one, the point in this is to teach him to hold, at present he has the whole kitchen or wherever he is kept, he can simply do the doo:D, then walk away, in a smaller space he will have to literally sit on it (dogs don't like this) therefor he is more likely to hold. You he return home an place him straight outside, watch him from a window and if u see hi doing the business wait till he is nearing the end and go out and give a "cue" good "wee wee", good "pooh pooh" the use the cue everytime you let him out.
When you are in you could do the teather thing, I have never done it, I ust make sure the dog is in the same room as me at all times when im in the house, this way when the dog shows signs of needing a motion you get his collar and guide him out, and each time u are out or cannot be with the dog (in crate) you have now taken ALL chances of passing a motion in the house "away"
If you currently now come in from walk, and he passes in another room and u then stumble upon it, your fault, you misses your chance to guide him to where he should be.
Does that make sense.
Re the crate, if you want to introduce one and have never used one, PM me and I will send a crate training guide (a positive way) to introuce a crate.
You could also buy a "pee post" google that one, look on ebay, it may help encourage him to start using the garden.
