New puppy when he is excited gets very nippy, he jumps up and runs at you with his mouth open! We have tried walking away, telling off yelping etc etc, he even does it when someone visits if he is in his excitable mood!

Any tips? He is more excitable than ANY puppy we have had before!

Block with knee or foot before you turn away.

If this doesn't work I spray my jeans with bitter apple -they soon get the idea that it is not clever to nip.

Be firm if you need to be, a mother/adult dog would give a snap and nip my whippet gave a good example for me the other day when I was dealing with a puppy lowchen (lady at witts end) with him snacking/nipping and tried everything, time out, ignoring, toys (nothing worked), I likened my whippets vocal and nip (which stopped the puppy in it's tracks from nipping at her) he sat back and looked bemused he has actually for the 1st time been told off for his behaviour and lay down beside her and regarded her and I compared this to be the equivelant to a tap on the bottom (short sharp shock) and a "ahh ahh" or "no" in a very firm voice, let the puppy differentiate between your vocals and associate it with the reprimand albeit a small one then you should just beable to use chosen command alone in a firm manner to stop the behaviour in it's tracks.
Puppy nipping can get out of hand, they have no siblings to rag around and more and feel an over whelming urge to use their teeth, explore, chew and get used to being handled.

Also when people visit try and get them not to fuss him whilst he is so cute, place him out and then them be seated and let him in, when he bounds over and is ott and nipping, take his collar or lift him and place him out of the room, repeat as many times as needed until he associates pestering equals "out" and ask guests to ignore him, no touch, talk, eye contact even when he is bouncing like tigger except to turn away or block as sugested.
Get him a bed in the room and learn him "in your bed command" so you can use it when you need to send him there with a positive "stuffed kong" long lasting occupier.
Don't allow him on chairs, as this is another good get away for you, to put yourself on the chair out of his reach (a negative) removing yourself.
