My first post in here I think, but I know that AAD is a fab place to come & ask about all canine related matters !

Our 18wk old JRT puppy has been as bright as a button all day - playing with our older dog & running about interspersed with sleeping times.

A kind friend gave him a sausage broken in to pieces about 1 inch long which he wolfed down before OH could intervene. He also managed to steal some left over chips.

He also probably ate a few bits of horse dung when he was with us doing the horses at about 5/6pm this evening. He picks it up & runs around with it, but that's something every puppy we've had has done, & they normally just grow out of it with no harm done.

He brought the sausage back up at about 7pm, & since then has brought up a fair bit of thick clear mucus a couple of times. He is shivering, & is very subdued, although his colour (eyelids & gums is good). His respiritory rate seems a little high too.

Could a sausage have upset his tummy to this extent?
He is curled up sleeping at the moment, & seems a little bit brighter, although still far from his normal self. Is it just an upset tummy (distressing at the time. but will pass), or should we be calling the vet?

Thanks in advance for any help, suggestions or reassurance anyone can offer - we lost our older dogs half brother to inflamatory bowel disease so we tend to be a bit 'OMG what's wrong' to vomit combined with other symptoms of illness like shivering etc.

I would atleast chat to the vet to be honest, a sausage alone could certainly cause upset, but with the other stuff he has eaten too, even more so.
Is he inclined to chew things around the house? is he able to keep water down? these are things the vet will ask anyways, and the sausage coming up, was it whole or partly digested?
The vet will atleast put your mind at ease and advise what to look out for and how to react to it? i.e call them back.

Thanks everyone.

Have spoken to the vet, Puppy seems more comfortable & has stopped shivering. Vomit was not projectile. He (vet) is slightly concerned that he hasn't wanted a drink since being sick (he is still sleeping), so if he doesn't have a drink when he wakes we are to phone again, Colour is still good, which he says is an encouraging sign as probably means it is just a reaction to unsuitable food stuffs as opposed to some kind of sickness (pup is fully vaccinated).

Thanks again for the speedy replies. Much appreciated.

Just to let you know pup slept well, & is back to his usual lively self this morning.
He has had small breakfast & has been drinking water too.
Thanks again for the advice & help. Much appreciated.
