My 4 month old whippet puppy is waking up earlier and earlier. Any ideas how to stop this? He used to sleep through till 7am (perfect). But over the past 10 days has started waking (and whining/howling) at 5am. I put him out and then back in his basket. He then settles for a while but starts the whole whining/howling thing again after about 30mins. I'm starting to suffer from sleep deprivation !?! (LOL).

My dog did this from about 6 months old and I know what you mean about lack of sleep. We tried ignoring him and then tried taking him to do the horses when he woke early and then not letting him sleep during the day. It didn't work and in the end we moved his bed upstairs into our room and he instantly slept through and hasn't been a problem since. Not an ideal solution for lots of people so good luck.

I wouldnt mind but mine has been with me for 8 months and is about 2 years old!!! I had to take him out at silly o'clock ONCE and he now thinks this is up time. Sits barking at the bottom of the stairs at 5 am- not good when you have neighbours.......

My two started doing this at about 13 weeks old. They had been crated at night sometimes together, and sometimes separate (getting them used to different situations) and were always quiet and good.

Suddenly 13 weeks old they started howling and 'chatting' (malamutes can raise quite a racket when they want to), we tried to ignore it for several nights, not wanting to 'give in'. But eventually we tried leaving them loose in the kitchen, a stair gate at the door and all chewables out of reach.

They are now 16 weeks and are quiet and happy throughout the night, so are we :D

Long may it last!

Whippet heaven is under the duvet, take him to bed with you. The only problem with this, is puppy sedatives make you late for work. I know this because I had a love-in this morning with two cats, one whippet and one small lurcher.

Do you feed your pup straight away when you get up? Sometimes this can cause them to wake earlier and earlier and be vocal as they want to be fed!
