Puppy won't toilet when we're "out out"!

So, 13 week old puppy is doing great with toileting in the garden and is clean at night. He can be an excited widdler in the house but apart from that he goes in the garden. We've started taking him out for short walks and as soon as we come back he's dying for the loo and goes in the garden. That's fine but there's a point on the 5/10min walk where he really needs to go and becomes hyper because he's bursting. He won't go to the toilet when we're out. I've made sure that he goes in the garden first and I don't know what it is but being outside seems to instigate his need to go. I've also tried going out when I feel he needs to pee but all that does is make him super hyper for the duration until he gets back to relieve himself in the garden. Has anyone experienced this? Not sure whether to just keep going and he'll eventually need to go when our walks get longer. It's just quite an unpleasant walk when he becomes hyper (anxious probably).

i think that is quite normal, mine grew out of it when he was let off lead, i just made sure he had been in the garden before walk and again after walk. i found it helpful to give an instruction when he did something , i say have a wee, or have a poo, not very original but is helpful as they get older so they wee on command if you are in a rush or on a long car journey where you can only use the motorway services...

Yes, I forgot to say that I have been saying "toilet" everytime he goes in the garden with the very purpose of saying it when we're out. It hasn't had any impact yet but will hopefully be useful!

It’s quite normal - it’s a confidence thing in my experience, I’ve got a ex racing greyhound who still won’t poo on a lead unless he is really desperate, and that’s after a year and a half with me. He has always been very stressy and anxious, he knows it leaves him vulnerable if he does it on the lead so close to me even though he loves and trusts me 100% by now.

I just make sure he goes before we go out, or make sure he can go as soon as we come back - he is getting better slowly ?

Perfectly normal, the big wide world is a scary places, toileting is something that puts you at risk.
In time the world will become less scary and toileting outside of the garden is usually achieved.

My first German Shepherd would only pee or poo in the garden and would not go at all when out for a walk. My current German Shepherd, goes on command. I recall my vet telling me that her springer spaniel would only pee on newspaper and one day, returning from a long walk, she went into her house and her dad had just set his newspaper down on the floor and the dog promptly went over and did a huge pee on the newspaper :p

Agree with everyone saying it's normal, my pup didn't wee or poo outside for a few months. I liked to pretend it was because she wanted some privacy and dignity (if dignity is possible when doing a poo) but in reality she just needed time to build her confidence and familiarity

OHs pointer is 7 and still refuses to pee out in the wide world. Doesn't seem to bother her, just have to remember not to rush her inside too soon if we've driven back from a walk ??

Oh I’ve just remembered - my lurcher (who I had from a pup) would also never go when we went to an event! I vividly remember lurking around in the woods for absolutely ages at Blenheim Horse Trials trying to make him go.... ?

He is doing really well if going in the garden usually and he will progress. Ruby took forever to housetrain and hardly ever wee'd on a walk for at least 6 months. She even came home and did it in the house a couple of times! She goes on command now but it has taken 10 months from start to finish. Hang in there.

My guess is he will outgrow the habit, or at the very least relax to the extant of going out in the wide world if he has to, even if he dislikes it. The dog in my avatar simply loathes going out in public, she gets a mortified look on her face when she simply must but she does do it now; when she was younger she demonstrated an amazing ability for holding her urine if things weren't to her satisfaction even in the privacy of her own garden, looking back I realize that I am quite fortunate that she never made herself ill!

Ive always had females ,they all went both in the garden and out on walks..no issues at all. the females would tend to poo in the same area of the garden too which made clean up very easy for me.
.....and then I got my male st poodle,( now 8)who still holds his number twos for his walks and won’t do this in the garden ( unless, very rarely he has a tummy upset and can’t hold it).
Ive mentioned this to several dog walkers and it surprised me they all had had a male ,never a female, who had the same issue..
Maybe it’s a territorial thing that males will urine mark their gardenas well as out on walks ,but prefer to leave their poo far from the home..? no idea..but it’s apparently very common for males to do this.

also to the OP,if you want to encourage pup to go when he’s out maybe try him on a flexi so that he can get a bit further away from you to sniff and then pee etc..This used to work well for my pups when they were learning the ropes about peeing etc on a walk..

someone else with the same issue as me, but mine is a female! won't go in the garden, and will literally escape under the fence to run to the field across the road to go...

We took Juno away camping when she was about 4 months and eventually she found she absolutely had to go... After that no problem, but it was getting to the stage where I was wondering about her as she'd held it for so long!
