Hello

Apologies for asking for yet more help! I'll be as brief as possible.

I have a ten month old whippet who came to us from the breeder on Purina dry puppy food.

He doesn't seem to have a sensitive stomach, which is great.

I got comments about how thin he is, but my vet said he is in perfect condition for a whippet which is nice to hear.

Anyway, my husband went and bought some of this one day:

I have a new job so am a bit distracted and didn't notice the change for about a week. I was sure this food wasn't ideal for him, so I have switched him back to the Purina dry puppy food.

However, that Baxters stuff blew his little mind, he loved it. He now has no interest in the Purina food and is dropping even more weight!

I think that Baxters stuff is squidgy/has a chewy texture. I was just wondering:

  1. Am I overreacting, is the Baxters stuff fine, shall I just give him that if he likes it so much?
  2. If the Baxters stuff is no good, it there any stuff you would recommend that has a mixed texture or this similar chewy texture? I think he really liked that aspect of it.
Massive thanks in advance!

I wouldn't use Bakers. Mine have all sorts. Currently on grain free kibble. Taste of the Wild one at the moment, was on offer. With Butchers grain free tin.+ raw chicken wing every lunchtime, + sardines in spring water couple of times per week, + and egg twice per week and raw free flow chicken and turkey 3/4 times a week, + bits. You know leftovers etc. They look fab on this and have loads of energy. All 3 are whippets ranging from 18 months to 2 1/2 years old. All 3 are out with me with the horses for at least 3 hours every day, sometimes more depending on jobs to be done. Hope that helps you. Just to add I do have one with a sensitive tummy hence the grain free thing. It has made a huge difference to him.

You guys are so helpful, thank you very much. Even just knowing it is called 'semi-moist' means I have now been able to find other brands that look good quality to try :)

Bakers is full of stuff to make the dog love it, at the expense of it actually being a good food. It used to be well known for having additives that were known to cause cancer. It is part of the Purina family, so maybe avoid the Purina food that the Breeder used too.

Have a look on here for a good quality food - 75% and above rating is good ( Bakers is 25%) https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/the-dog-food-directory

My whippet cross at 20 months was too skinny and I felt it was partly due to his poos being sloppy and partly because he was still growing. I changed to Burgess sensitive and poos are now fine and at 15 months he looks just right too me and my vet said he is perfect weight wise and lovely shines coat.. so I would think your whippet may fill out once he gets a bit older

Like I say, my neighbour gave me a bag and it was grand for training, I was speaking to a German judge last year who trains his dogs to track using Frolic 😬
I've mellowed a bit in recent years, it's a bit like giving your kids chocolate or having the odd pizza as a treat, you wouldn't eat it all the time and it's not good for you, but if it's offered or it's all you have in the house or as an occasional treat etc etc etc.....

Vegetable protein extract is monosodium glutamate under another name, a very good reason to avoid this food but probably why he likes it so much.

I hope this info will enable people to make the best food choices for their dogs. Please click the links.

MSG:

Vegetable glycerin, added to pet food and treats to give them a semi moist consistency.
