Hello

Possibly a stupid question, but my 10 month old JRT is going through her first proper heat cycle - she has now been bleeding for two weeks - this is my first dog, is this really how long they bleed or is it just because its her first?

Thanks

the whole thing lasts for 3 weeks as far as i know, my little terrier bled for about a week but she was so keen to clean herself it may have been longer. each bitch is different so i wouldnt worry too much. why not give your vet a ring and ask, it wont cost anything and will put your mind at rest...also we need piccies of the little girl please, we all love seeing puppies :)

I’ve only had the one bitch so someone more experienced will post shortly I’m sure but mine who is now 1.5, her first she bled for about 3 weeks! She had her second a couple of months back and that was shorter at about 1.5 weeks but I think she also was a lot better at keeping herself cleaner so we perhaps didn’t notice her bleeding for as long.

I actually thought she had her first heat a few months ago but there was only a tiny smear on my bedding where as this time there is constant spotting we’ve had to resort to nappies to work with my neutral colour scheme ?
Anyway here are some snaps of Penguin

I’ve had six girls in succession....the smaller breeds come into season earlier and it generally goes like this. Many pups will have a false start as you’ve noted..then the season will start in earnest…next time she should probably be more predictable in hercycle.

All dogs are different so this is a general guide…
..I used to mark my calendar with a yellow highlighter for twenty one days ( from the first show of blood),and take especial care throughout. The second week was red starred as ovulation usually occurs here..
Day one is the first show of blood…this can last from five to eight days (,or even two weeks as youve noted)..usually the discharge will change to clear…but this clear period is the most fertile time in the season,so do be especially careful .
Usually after twenty one days the cycle will end and you will have your girl back.
My breeder warned me that one of her girls actually got pregnant at 28 days so I’ve always been attentive for the full four weeks .

if you know the breeder well I’ve found it useful to ask about the timing between cycles,as I’ve found my girls often followed their mothers..ie one came into season every 5 months…another every eight months..nothing is set in stone.

Lovey pup!

Varies wildly between bitches. I've one who ovulates on day 9 and is done and dusted by day 14. I have one who is still bleeding at day 28 but has actually ovulated at day 14!
