I am going to see a 3yr old tonight :D and would like a vetting done prior to purchase

As this is the fist vetting I have ever organised (all my others I just bought ) what’s the most acceptable one?

I have enquired about the 5 Stage Vetting however it £250 plus call out of £45 . This is nearly the cost of the horse! :D

So, what about a 2 stage? Is that enough?

Obviously totally up to you.

You would be taking a risk in having the 2 stage but if the price of the horse isnt much the risk may be worth it.

Even 5 stage vetting dont showup everything!

It all depends on the seller's facilities TBH although as said before, a 5* is not normally done on a youngster and it also depends on the value too.
I'm perfectly happy for my youngsters to be vetted prior to buying but I do not have a school to lunge in and it's incredibly rare for anything of mine to lunge anyway as they won't have been started. I would be very unhappy to have one lunged or chased around on the hard ground in case any damage was done to it but if the sellers have a school, they should be able to sort something out for you.
Foals are sold with just a basic eyes, heart and lungs check along with conformation.

How exciting for you!! I didnt have a vetting on my chap when I bought him - he was 3 and unbacked - just saw him in an arena loose to see his paces and soundness. He is now 8 and all is well !

Hope it all goes well - enjoy x

I bought a 15mth old last year and just asked my vet to check him over really so, a 2 stage I guess. Just wanted to check the vitals - heart, lungs, eyes etc and also, as our vet knows what we want our horses to do, get his opinion on general conformation etc. I asked him to specifically look at his front legs as I thought one did turn out slightly more than the other and to get his thoughts on whether he thought this was likely to cause any problems.

Personally I would prefer to have a vetting done than not but it would depend on how much i was paying I guess!

Yeah, we had a 2 stage done on our boy last year as a 2yo. He hadn't been lunged but was very well handled so they were able to do a decent trot up. Unless he's very expensive (over 5K) insurance companies don't ask for a 5 stage but it's worth having the two stage done for your peace of mind. If you can, try and attend and then you can ask the vet any questions you need to.

If you are going to insure him I would recommend talking to the insurance company about what they need. I was amazed to find out that I needed a five stage vetting on a four year old that I had had for 18 months but only just decided to insure as he was starting to go out and do. I appreciate that if your horse isn't backed then a five stage vetting is not possible but just make sure you have what you need.

If I was selling or buying any horse older than a foal it would be wind tested, ie. lunged, all national hunt bred TBs are and so are sport horses over here. Had 2 vetted here last week and it cost 100 euros each for a full pre sale vetting and then they went to the sale where they again had a full vetting, they were unbroken 3 year olds.Yearlings are wind tested after a sale and returnable if making a noise, this doesn't apply before june (not positive of the month) of their yearling year. So here if you buy an unbroken youngster you would have to give the vendor a few days to teach it to lunge if it didnt already know how. All youngsters at irish sales should know how to lunge although how well it is done in some cases might be open to debate!:)
