I’m getting my first potential horse better on Friday. Assuming all goes well, when would be normal to confirm purchase etc? As I need to also sort transport (which I have tentatively booked)

rather excited and nervous! Thanks!

If there are literally no issues on vetting then I think you would confirm purchase immediately. If there are some issues you may want to consider further investigation, or a price reduction, and so you would talk to the seller about this before transferring money or arranging transport. Hope all goes well! What is the horse like?

Thanks both! He’s a beauty of an Irish Sport Horse. I’m so excited.

I just don’t want to mess the seller about. If all goes well, would it be acceptable to move him on the Sunday or Monday? Or is that too long to keep the seller waiting (even if I was able to pay on the same day as vetting?)

No, that sounds good to me as long as your transport is good with that. Id pay a deposit and once your horse is picked up transfer the rest, unless its a reputable company or you know the person ?

We’ve purchased a new horse in the last few days. Vetted her on Thursday, paid in full that evening (we’d already paid a deposit), insured as soon as we sent payment as assumed she was technically ours, and arranged transport for Sunday.

Seller was happy with this and just asked for payment before the horse left the yard but as it was a bank holiday weekend we paid earlier to ensure money was in her account.

Good luck, I hope it all goes well.

Good luck.

TIPS

You need to get the horse to you as soon as possible after the vetting. This is so that there is no chance it could get injured.

If you are sending money by BACS make sure you have enough in your allowance, for example my bank would only let me send £5K a day to someone, although you are able to jig this around on your settings. I had a massive panic but luckily the horse was vetted on the Tuesday and we collected on the Friday so had enough time to sort this out.

Insure the horse before it arrives as there is normally a 14 day or 21 days deferment period usually where you cannot claim for anything other than injury on your insurance policy. So if you insure the horse as soon as it passes the vetting the countdown has already started.

Make sure you know what feed the horse is on before it arrives to give you chance to buy the same - you can always alter its diet slowly later on over 7 to 10 days. Same for hay/haylage. Mine was on haylage but it was their own made haylage and he went off the Marksway. Fortunately I had already started moving him slowly over to hay and by the time he went off the haylage completely he was already nearly eating nearly 80% hay so it wasn't too bad.

Enjoy!

Wiggy was vetted on Friday, I paid for him Friday night and picked him up first thing Saturday but he was only an hour away and I picked him up myself. It would have taken a few days longer if I'd had to arrange transport. When I bought Charlie the dealer helped me organise transport as he was quite a distance away so that took a few days - I think he was vetted Wednesday and he came to me on the Saturday.

I’ve typically been on site for vetting, paid immediately after passing by bank transfer to seller. Started prearranged insurance on phone at that point. (Pre-existing conditions excluded by a travelling home injury Etc is covered immediately).

I then take horse straight home.
