Morning all

Just a quick question - is the title possible?

My horse has been suffering grade 4 pyloric ulcers for 10 months and is almost completely unresponsive to treatment (ompeprazole/ranitidine/sucralfate/ritetrac). Therefore, although its a long shot im considering the poosibility of food allergy?

Seeing as he is not improving i wonder whether his feed could be upsetting his belly (ulcer symptoms began 6weeks after he arrived) he had never had hard feed before i got him.

Thing is- he is fed pure feeds pure easy (the low energy feed)

So just wanted to know if anybody has come accross a horse with a problem with the feed. On paper its fab for ulcers.

It contains soy which i though may be a culprit?

Im also getting him blood tested today

The problem with that is he is on so much ulcer medication (21 tablets and a tonne of powder in each feed) that i need to give him something to take all of this.

Not all of the tablets are dissolvable and by syringing the rest, including the powder i worry about him rejecting his daily gastrogard syringe!

After getting the blood results back i will definitely have to look at a way of doing this, just wondered whether anybody else had herd of a similar allergy issue

You could try something like fast fibre to hide the medication in.

It's cheap, and low energy. Mind think it has either soya or molasses in it.

Just checked its got soya in it.

Dodson and horrell equine senstive doesnt have soya or molasses in it, and will soak into a nice mush. Or you could use some grass pellets. Not much in them apart from grass!

Or low grade pain?

If you are going down the allergy route then soaked grass pellets would be my choice as a base for supplements.

I'd stay clear of any commercial compound feeds to start with

Thanks guys, i was considering the equine sensitive although ruled it out because it was pellets- didnt think about soaking it.

We've been down the pain route with a week stay at rvc (bone scans, mri, x-ray, nerve blocks etc) also has 6weekly osteo/physio and thermal imaging

He just seems to be completely resistent to all ulcer medication!!!

Could it be mycotoxins in his diet? I feed mycosorb from progressive earth now as a precaution as we have clover in the fields. Mine also had ulcers - stomach and hind gut so was treated with succeed for 90 days. I now feed happy tummy, fast fibre, hemp oil, mins and vits and mycosorb and ad lib hay.
