Pure feeds unshod horse????

Two threads in one day don't know whats got in to me :)

Quick question, I have just started feeding my cob Pure Fibre Balance.... was just about to order some more, so if it snows I have extra, but looked at the ingrediants and it seams to have a lot of starch and sugar.

I'm now starting to think maybe I should feed something else like Fast Fibre and micronised linseed, the only problem I can see with this is.....

He may be a cob but he will only eat something he thinks is worth eating, I used to feed him just unmolassed chaff untill he decided it was not worth coming in for. So changed to happy hoof wich is full of starch and sugar so then changed to Pure feeds.
Now I'm all confused :( and to top it off in summer he becomes really flat and lazy so have to feed something else to get the energy so will have to rethink all over again.

Ggrrrr I have to much time on my hands to day so I'm filling it with over thinking what to do with pony.

Is Pure Fibre Balance ok to feed to a pony that is not shod?

Any ideas would be brill.
 
How's he doing on it? The proof is in the pudding, so to speak :D.

If he's sound and stomping around with no issues then it's all good. If you're having problems, then maybe consider trying the fast fibre, linseed and minerals.
 
I don't think it has got alot of starch and sugar, here's the ingredients on the website.

Pure Balance, grass chaff, oat straw chaff, Oat Feed Pellets and soya oil.

The only thing that would be a problem for me is that having feed and balancer premixed means you cannot alter the quantities of feed according to weight and energy and work done without messing up the quantities of minerals fed.

I would also prefer not to have iron and manganese added as our forage is already too high in these.
 
Cannot really tell only just started using it, slowly mixed it in the the happy hoof, but all the happy hoof is gone now so just feeding Pure Fibre Balance.

But thought I best get some more as if there is a 1/2mm of snow on the lane to our yard you can only get 4x4 up coming down is easy as long as you want to stay at the yard all day :D

criso - I did look got it to add up together at about 13.5% starch and sugar could be wrong. I do have to feed less as hes a good dooer, but he gets an added balencer anyway, another thought behind Fast Fibre etc

In that case it's really up to you whether you want to continue to try the pure feeds or not (sorry, I know that's not much help :o). My thoughts on the feed are similar to criso's. If you want to continue the Pure Feeds - maybe switch to Pure Easy or Pure Working, which has 10% combined NSC?

On the website says 8.5 starch and 5 sugar. The latter is about the same as unmolassed sugarbeet.

Must be the grass chaff pushing those levels up as everything else is just filler.

If you are adding a balancer as well I would use something else as the carrier because you are doubling up on minerals and paying twice for the balancer.

May see how the 2 bags go. If the snow comes before I need more feed will have to get delivered to my mums then pick up in 4x4 or the snow may force my hand to getting Fast Fibre etc and try that.

Again I wish my pony could talk!!
 
I switched to Pure Fibre Balance after struggling to get mine to eat their minerals. I only want a small feed for vits and mins as we have good grass and they have plenty of haylage/hay.

My unshod horses have never had such good hooves and coats, they are gleeming.

I have previously used Simple Sytems which at the time thought was excellent also but mine certainly thrive on Pure Feeds.
 
I feed Pure feeds easy to all of the horses and they look fabulous. Coats really gleaming. I also feed pro hoof to my laminitic mare just because she needs some extra nutrients for her feet.
 
Thanks for the answers, I think I'll give it a try and see was just over thinking things as I have no work to do :D and jumpped when I read how much starch and sugar it has. I was thinking of putting him on Pure Easy in summer as it has more energy???? Or thats how I under stand it.

Our fields are meadow grass and at the mintue there is far to much grass for him, so he's being strip fed the grass.
 
I know every horse is diff but my girl sounds like your guy. She would eat something for a minute, Id stock up and then shed decide it wasnt for her. I went through lots of trial and error until we stumbled upon Fast Fibre and Linseed and unless she is full on grass, she will never turn her nose up at it and weve been with it for about a year now which is the longest shes ever stayed with something. She loves the stuff esp on a cold day and I add warm water to it. Shes looking great on it too. Its not too expensive per bag so you could just try it and if he doesnt like then mix it into your existing feed? In the summer you could just add some grass nuts or barley which might just give him a little spark.

Im not so clued up but I did read somewhere that despite the happy hoof having the laminitic badge, its still high in sugar and stuff. Just something to ponder over......

I got told Happy Hoof is full of sugar too.

Yeah sounds like ours are same, if theres grass or even hay for him in the field I can bugger right off unless its something very very tasty for him eat.

I may try a mix of fast fibre and Pure Fibre Balance see what he thinks about it, I just have a really small tack room that is also my feed room so just wanted one bin but may have to try and find room.
