Purebed and other shavings alternatives?

Does anyone use purebed?

I currently use deep litter shavings but the cost is now so extortionate I need to think more carefully!

When I had Lari I used platinum plus pellets (one bag a fortnight) with a bed about 4-6 inches thick with shavings. I added a bale of shavings once a week.
