purposefully scaring horse!

Went out hacking yesterday to have a car come real close to horse rev his engine and beep his horn, (saw him smiling) ended up with my 4 year old in the hedge and nervous for the next few cars that came up behind him! What do they get out of doing it?
 
I guess they fall into two groups, the stupid and the twisted/embittered.

I've had a few idiots like this, one threw a glass bottle in front of my 4 year old which smashed on the road, another threw a shaken, opened can of coke from the top of a bus which exploded in front of my horse and another time, a group of drunken yobs blasted the horn and yelled from their open roofed car as they slowly kerb crawled past us.

Fortunately, my horses had the same attitude as me;- complete disdain in the face of the cerebrally challenged.:D

When I kept my horse near a housing estate we had an ice cream van driver who apparently took great pleasure in trying to scare horses with his chimes. Tit.

I did try a 'cavalry charge' on a group of kiddies who threw stones at my friend and me on horseback once (I might have lost my temper just a little bit...). Even fat kids can run.
 
If this happens again, try and take a note of the reg number and report it to the police. It may be something that this fool has done before, or will do again, and while the police may not do anything this time, in future if there are more reports then he is likely to get a visit from the police.
 
This makes me so bloody angry. Out riding with my daughter last week and some twit came tearing up to us, straight rd so he saw us well in advance came so close revving and smirking as he passed. The bit that really got me was there were kids in his car!

Secondly I wouldn't dream of driving like that past his kids on bikes forget about horses

A yob in a car gave a long sound of his horn at us as we where riding round a sharp blind bend. I turned round and looked at him.

Then once round the bend he over took us and stoped in front of us and got out of his car and started screeming at me. I got off my horse and asked my riding partner to hold my horse while I sorted him out.

Screeming yob came towards me just as my horse stepped forward and stood on yobs foot. Yob did not appreciate half a ton of weight on his foot. Justice!

Omg I wish there was a like button! That is so funny. I told my daughter to back my horse up towards some little sods who kept trying to scare him (didn't work but could have done) and say loudly "kick" of course he wouldn't but they stopped trying to frighten him after that!
 
We had a fool pull rather sharply infront of my mare, so that he could swing into a yard entrance. I did shout at him, and he felt it was fine to come and shout and try and intimidate me, cue sisters ginormous Westphalian Cold Blood (think Belgian Draught on steroids :p) going into Ride of the Valkeries mode, trotting on the spot, mane and feathers flying, rather large shouty chap ran away :D :D :D
 
A sad reflection on todays society I'm afraid, would never have happened when I first started riding far back in the mists of time!! People have no respect these days (now I really do sound old!).
Was told to "get your *******ing horse back in its *******ing field" by some charming young man a few days ago whilst out on a quiet hack. Very sad really. :(
Edited to say, won't let me swear with an f and ***ing, is that a new forum feature or has it always done that?

Absolutely. What an utter idiot!

Makes me think we need to police horse train our horses so they don't react to such morons.
 
Bit of a different context but made me angry all the same.

I've just seen a video on fb of a horse being clipped. You can here the girls laughing before taking the clippers near the horses ears. Horse starts throwing its head about and clearly isn't happy, they carry on before the horse throws its self up in the air, whilst they run in all directions laughing. You then here one of them through the laughs saying "yep, got it that time"

That really made me mad. Sure some horses don't like clippers, but surely trying to get them used to them kindly rather than winding them up so you can record it is just plain cruel.
 
this has happened to me!! it was a van and two guys who were probably about my age (in their 20's) luckily my mare is a saint and didnt batter an eye lid but it made me so angry!! what if id have been on a horse that isnt as forgiving? :( later that day a motor cyclist came past doing id say at least 70mph!!! on one wheel scared that crap out of me again my mare was a saint ..honestly though what idiots!! x
 
Had a couple of people speed past me the other day, could see them coming behind quickly and now slowing, despite a hand wave to slow and me shouting it. On a horse that isn't overly confident hacking on her own, it doesn't help.

Most people did pass slowly though, and smiled and waved back at me for thanking them.
 
Next time you ride out, take a pen with you and your phone. If any idiot does this again, write his reg down on your hand and phone cops. Tell them a 'Drunken Driver' has nearly crashed into you. Give reg and where you think he was heading/area etc. The Cops more likely to go look for him and even if he had not been drinking he could have motoring offences against him, no insurance,tax,mot etc.

I've done the cavalry charge trick as well, me and a friend used to have problems with teens standing in the bridleway waving their arms and making loud shushing noises to spook the horses. some days they would even hide in the wooded bits and leap out shouting. luckily our horses were very sensible, but one day we lost our tempers and just galloped straight through the lot of them - like u said, even fat kids can run!! :D
 
I've had this a few times, ignorant young and bored teenagers looking for some fun... But luckily my horse gets a bit angry if anything gets to close, and randomly bucks. Scares them off, when they she 2 horse shoes in their face. :D

But seriously, people are sick these days. At least half of the worlds population is sick and twisted.
 
It's shocking how many people experience this. :(

I'm very fortunate and it's only happened to me once, and then it was my mum!!! It was when I was trying Genie 4 years ago and she decided in her wisdom to shake off her coat right by her and then put up an umbrella.

Not horsey my mum, although she did show me that the mare was a sensible 4 year old!

One of my friends was out riding yesterday, she was in a group of 7 & at the back, a car came speeding up & they asked him to slow down as they were just heading to a passing space to pull in (it was a narrow lane with passing spaces). He didnt bother to slow down & went straight into the back of the pony, sending him & my friend flying, thankfully both were miraculously ok & the pony gave both barrels to the car. My friend although shaken up managed to get out her phone & take a photo of his number plate.....he then tried driving at her whilst doing this.
Obviously the incident was reported to the police & they have said there is nothing they can do & wont get involved.....however the icing on the cake has to be him turning up on her doorstep last night, telling her she was lying to the police & that 7 horses shouldnt be allowed out on the road! Honestly the guy is a total idiot, does he not realise he could have killed the pony, my friend & possibly himself!!
 
I witnessed two girls out riding the other day ... they were riding side by side even though they knew they were holding up the traffic which was naughty of them!! :mad:
Oncoming tractor sees them and i swear he puts his foot down even though they were waving him to slow down. One went up in the air, luckily the girl stayed on and i shouted abuse at the farmer (I was a few cars behind) as he went past me.

As i passed the riders I asked them if they were ok and then reminded them that single file would have been a better option at that time! :rolleyes:

There is also a white porche that drives like an A hole round the lanes by the stables and we reported him to the police ... but then one of the local farmers (a good guy) cornered him in his tractor down a lane and gave him an earful ... he hasnt been seen since :D

Good heavens, what an awful experience. The police are wrong, there is something they can- and should do; prosecute for dangerous driving and endangering life.
Also, how did the driver find out the rider's address? Did the police put her in future danger by giving her name and address to the man ?

I'd be tempted to seek legal advice and send a letter of complaint to the chief constable regarding the policeman who dealt with the report.

I've asked girls locally to go single when on the smaller roads as although they can see us, you can't see them in cars as too low down.

However if on an open road obvious to see out with a youngster/nervous horse/rider and I knew there were passing places I'd probably stay double and wait til safe to pull in. I'd rather pee off a few people riding two abreast (legal) than end up with a horse throuh a car if I had any doubts about it.
I'd acknowlege the driver (as they did though).
 
How awful for both of you. There are real idiots out there.

I would however, like to say biggest thanks to any drivers on the main Marlborough/Devizes road yesterday, as we got stranded after hunting after a crisis at the yard and had no option but to hack back instead, which involved going down that road for about 6 miles. We got off it soon as we could and tried to keep out the way where we could, and every single driver was absolutely polite and courteous of the horses. We were bricking it having to ride down there, but every single driver was brilliant. :)

This is exactly what i though as well, i dont think she will leave it drop, he brother-in-law is an ex policeman so she is planning on speaking to him & seeing what he suggests she does (he was very high up in the local force before retirement). I think her address was given to him as he wants to make a claim on her insurance for the horse kicking the car. She actually thought he was coming round to apologise & ended up shutting the door in his face. Im just so glad she was ok, it doesnt bear thinking about what could have happened :(
 
My friend and I were talking about this on a hack yesterday. We have to ride on the road as there isn't much of bridle path network nearby, never the less the roads we do ride on are country lanes with a lot of horsey traffic. It completely amazes me that in a horsey populated area people have NO idea how to drive to look out for both horse and car. During our discussion we had to pass a house having a new extension built, and my friend said her horse may spook as he did last time. I therefore turned and asked the car coming behind me to stop while we went past said building site. The car did not stop or even bother to slow down, tried over taking, horse spooked and so nearly ended up on his bonnet. Safe to say after seeing his face I don't think he will ever make that mistake again. But its sad to think that a near miss is what it will take to make people more respectful on the road.
 
Also on the flip side, I am always very careful to say thank you to any driver slowing to pass or having to wait and will wave on the more careful driver if I can see round a bend. It does annoy me when driving if a rider doesn't say thank you, obviously in a stream of cars it isn't always possible to thank everyone or when taking a hand off the reins may mean certain death but a smile and a nod is all it would take, maybe this will improve rider driver relations :)

A nod of the head costs nothing and doesn't endanger you in any way. Most are v polite around here, but there a couple of numptys who I've been inclined to rev past on occasion :eek:

I agree, cyclists also annoy me in this way when driving. They ride at 3 and 4 abreat so you cant get past and have to crawl along behind them, that makes me want to ram them off the road a bit (I obviously dont, or havent .... yet!!)

I knew a woman who used to take really long whip out with her and hit cars on the roof if they came too close, made them think they clipped her, no one ever stopped shockingly! Another woman used to keep small stones in her pocket which she would throw at cars if they drove disrespectfully. Both of these examples would probably make my horse have a meltdown and I dont really think they are the answer to helping the situation. I guess some people will always just be rude, rider or driver.
