Purposely stopping your horse before and after a jump?

thank you all for your advice, i realise it is going to take time and im willing to take my time with him. Ill let you know how we progress! thanks again everyone x

we managed to slow down my old loan horse by sort of doing that, if the jump was on the 3/4 line in line with b, i would trot the long side, come back to walk for the turn in, then trot into the jump, the bringing back to walk really helped with him, because he was just used to being hammered into jumps. and then i would have to stop before i got to the fence at the other end of the school, then carry on in walk. he was a bit daft in that if he trotted round the corner, he would think canter, so walking round the corner only made him think trot, if that makes sense!

I stop PF and the Ginger Beastie, who both like to bowl o,n before and after fences. Neither of them are stoppers so I don't think it does teach them to refuse. If they're very excited I'll also circle them in front of a fence several times before jumping, but not as a sort of 'last minute pull out' sort of thing, because I could see how that might encourage them later to run out. Works very well for my two
