This little dales was broken at 3 he was wicked...really bad..would run through fences..hedges...anything..bucked reared etc...was sent away and was sent back with put to sleep or sell( who would have bought him) but we turned away instead...he was out of work for 3 years...he matured..then i brought him back slowly...he was afraid of his own shadow...literally, he wouldnt walk over a hose pipe in his field even though his dinner was on other side of field...anyway, i kept on with him ..lots of falls and bruises etc...but he came good...was hacking out not too bad etc so decided to try him jumping..well he found his feet in this..he loved it..we had ups and downs he went through a refusal phase for 6 weeks he was terrified of fillers...but i kept on...e was going double clears in no time...i was even able (to everyones disbelief) hand over to my 12 year old daughter...heres a few pics of them now...so anyone who encounters problems..dont give up ..This dales is proof of that.

Wow, he's fab :D
It takes guts and determination not to give up, he's a credit to you and you can feel the pride you have in him jumping off the screen!
I've a pillock 14.3hh Irish cob, my daughter and I stick with him and we're now getting there, so many said punt him but we wouldn't and I doubt I need to explain why to you :)

Oh thanks i just wanted to share because many times i felt like giving up and we have had lots of lows but now when i see them out jumping im so proud...and can i just say my daughter only had 12 lessons when she started riding him i think he taught her to ride lol !! (shes had a few bruises too) but she kept on at him !

Well done to you and your daughter. What a lovely post. I know how you feel as I was told to give up on Lucy my old mare as she would NEVER come right. Her story is here.

She realy was an increadable mare and I miss her so so much. :(
Now I have the horrid one (aka Herbie) Who I was also told to give up on. But slowly and shorley he is coming good to and if turns out to be even 1/4 of the pony Lucy was I'll be a very lucky girl :).
I hope you have many many happy years with your boy :)

WOW what a lovely post , it's funny isn't it when people tell you to give up if animals don't comply to a certain level in the first nano second of time , I'm sure as humans we don't expect kids to all behave perfectly from the off , what sort of world would it be if we just wrote all the badly behaved kids off and just abandoned them - well done to you for showing courage and determination , along with patience in spades no doubt...and what a lovely horse you have now!

My old Dales x was as spooky as hell all his life but loved life and also enjoyed jumping (although some colours of poles and fillers remained horrifically scary his whole life). So glad you stuck with it!

What a lovely post and what a fabulous pony! My YM has 2 dales and even the 5 year old is an absolute saint I love them! Well done to you for sticking with him and what a lucky lucky pony to have found you x

It's posts like this that make me want to come on here more & more they really make my day, so nice to see such postive posts & makes me feel more dedicated to achieve things. Well Done he is looking fab :D

Lovely story, and it is nice to hear of people not giving up. My lad was judged as "dangerous" but he has come right, has the odd blip but he is a good boy now. It really is worth persevering. Well done you.

You should be very proud of yourself and he is a lovely looking boy.

I too read Laura's story for the first time and it had me filling up. It just shows what generous and forgiving creatures they are, given the chance.

What a lovely post. :) Well done!

I know how it feels I got my 14.2hh as a five year old he was the same, I was told by many to sell him before "he put me in intensive care with a broken neck" was one of the many quotes!! Nine years later.. he now competes at BD and has done camp, sj, xc and been used as an occasional lead rein pony for my friend's kids!

Totally agree with you not to give up, as with time and patience they can often be turned around. :)

Thanks for all the lovely replies.

Yes everyday he gets better and better and when i see the smile on my daughters face when she comes out of the arena with a rossette its priceless, i often watch him now and think back to the days when you were lucky to stay on his back for more than 3 minutes lol.

Laura what a beautiful story its the first time i have read it, i think your new pony is very lucky to have such a wonderful owner and im sure hell turn out to be as fab as lucy.

Well done. You have proved all the people wrong who doubted you. You should be very proud of yourselves.
People told me to get rid of my naughty boy, he has had me in hospital a few times but we persevered and now I have a bombproof, go-anywhere, slightly autistic sweetheart. He's been looking after me while I've been pregnant, and is now the perfect saintly schoolmaster for my friend's daughter while my bump grows. A far cry from the horror that used to chuck me off once a week!

What a fab pony well done for not giving up he's a credit to you!
I bred a foal from my beautiful mare and he (now 9) has been exceptionally difficult and so many people have said to 'shoot him', I was responsible for him coming into this world and I will not give up in fact I'm ultra determined we will achieve great things, stories like you certainly help to inspire :o)

Well my father always said you will only get out what you put in, and we have put a hell of a lot of time love and energy in but we are certainly getting a lot back from him now, i have a youngster whom is the opposite shes been a dream to bring on and such a calm willing girl but although im proud of her i doubt ill ever feel the same satisfaction, altho the lack of hospital visits and broken bits is great !!:)

very old post but just wanted to update... we are now 2-3? years on and said horse is now teaching my husband to ride lol...seriously hubby had never even sat on a horse but has had 6 lessons on him and they are doing great ... quite unbelievable that mad mids could be calm enough to forgive husbands hands and legs lol, he really has turned out to be the horse of a lifetime !!

So anyone going through rough time or feeling like they have bought the wrong horse... well they can come good !!
