Considering letting someone (I know and trust) take my 16 year old mare and put her in foal. She had a lovely foal 6 years ago, very straightforward cover and foaling. Have I left it too long for her to have another? Is it more risky at 16 re breeding? Or is she still prime enough?

I would be more than happy to put her in foal, I have known a couple of older mares foal with no problems at all and these were maiden mares.

My mare was 17 and happily foaled a healthy colt. She did need a wash out and took about three seasons to stick but I let her do it all natural and started early as possible to give her as much chance as possible as you basically miss a season when washing out So you may be getting a bit late for this year unless you're happy with a later foal.

Thanks for reply. She's going over to meet her boy toy next week!! No worries about a later foal and hopefully will all go smoothly

I did this with my mare, I had a foal from here when she was 11, I had no intentions of her having another until a friend asked if she could loan her and breed a foal using her own graded connie stallion, she was 17 at this point so foaled at 18 with no issues at all. she is now back home with me at 21.

I'm very glad to read these posts, hoping to breed my girl next year. She'll be 14, so foaling at 15 all going well. Vet is coming next week to check for cysts/reasons she may not be fit to breed. So keeping everything crossed we can has baby
