Is it acceptable and safe to put a fleece under a medium weight rug or would it make more sense to put a heavy weight on during a chilly night?

yes acceptable and safe in my opiion but i would still opt for the heavy weight if you have one and its needed, fleeces rub shoulders out like nobodies business when left on for long periods.

That's great - thanks for your help. Think I will stick to the heavy weight to be on the safe side. Psychologically it seems a little warm for a heavy weight moving my boy to a new yard on a hill and its very chilly so should be ok!

Thanks again

I did it during the snow & didn't realise the damage till too late. Several weeks later a huge scab developed on his withers, & its only just healing now. I'd used a Thermatex under a heavyweight, but have now bought a proper rug liner which is cut higher over the withers & neck & is made of slippier nylon.

Id definately advise against it. As someones said - they can pull back. I used to put fleeces on under turnout rugs until this winter when it was particularily wet and windy for a couple of days (horse lives out), it pulled back one night, next day the chest straps had actually cut into his skin! Was absolutely awful

Never ever again.
