what does this technically make a horse do?

i was jumping a grid with dani today...

CROSS - bounce - CROSS - one stride - OXER

and as i was jumping it, dani wasnt REALLY concentrating as much as he could be, he would tap the oxer with his toes a little bit...but then a friend came over and he put a pole accross the oxer like this (birds eye view) |\| and dani really picked up and concentrated and was basculing lovely.

iv seen it used before, but never done so myself...and is it simply to make them concentrate or does it have a particular purpose?

just curious

I did this in a lesson recently (do you remember seeing the video on my blog?) In that case it was used because the oxer was getting very wide and we didnt want Arctic jumping in the middle of it

Or trying to put down to early!!

It can also be used to get the horses in the air - the same way you might use a filler/water tray.

Also useful if they're getting a bit tappy and casual, it makes the front rail
more secure (weight of diag pole holds it in cups) and if horse does knock it down, it makes an impressive noise as it all falls, enough to make them try much harder next time.

Had to do this many, many years ago with my 13.2 pony as he decided that the oxer at the end of our grid was far easier as a bounce
