Sorry for your situation but I think the above suggestion is completely unreasonable. The yard owner is running a business and probably has their own financial problems. Why not ask Tesco to supply you with free food while you are at it?
It is not exactly the same. If the original poster, walked away and left the horse in livery, then the YO does become liable for the care and feeding of the horse. Many yard owners, if the person is known to be trusted, and reliable, would allow a small amount of lee-way in dire circumstances. As OP is going to struggle with rent and hay etc. it is worth being upfront and discussing the problem with the YO. There might be jobs could do in short term against rent. Or YO might have some suggestions.
Another thought is, do you have any redress through unfair dismissal? Had you worked their two years (when your rights kick in)?
