Now the people who have just viewed Dollar really want him (as long as he passes the vetting) but would like him on trial for 4 weeks before paying me the full price. They said they will gie me a deposit when they fetch him.

How do you go about it? I mean, they were lovely people but you never know and they live 3 hours away! Do you think 4 weeks is too long and it should be only 2? Help please!

Eek - don't do it!

Let them pay you in full and accept that you will have him back if he doesn't work out but make sure its completely watertight so they can't break him and return him.
Trust is nice but goes nowhere with horse sales! (MO)

I 100% agree!!
Unfortunatly you cannot trust many people these days
I would defo go with the idea of paying in full and taking him back after 2 weeks shoud he not be suitable.
Otherwise there is too much scope for either your pony to go missing, get broken or be screwed up.
Dont let your superstar go any other way.!!!!

I wouldnt- if they like him they should accept they have to pay and take the pony full stop!
If they arent sure they should arrange to come and try him again- otherwise they cant be that interested.

Yes, totally agree with Clodagh - there was a case in the H&H a while back - horse and people disappeared without trace. I know its terrible to be cynical about all this but really, it is much better to be safe than sorry. Im sure the purchasers will understand - after all, they are horse people too? Also, ask for a bankers draft or Building society cheque - cash is even better. Hope it all goes well.

don't do it! Had a really bad experience at my yard recently where there was a pony on trial that got kicked in the field, had to have an operation, and is on 3 months box rest. Was really complicated and messy. I would never do it!

PLEASE DON'T DO IT! I know so many people who terrible things have happened whilst horses have gone out on trial, even the 'nicest' people in the world. Anything can go wrong. If he passes the vetting then he is sold, and they buy him simple as.
I wouldn't ask anyone for a trial period, why not suggest they come out again if they are unsure, but don't risk him going on trial.

Sorry I wouldn't do it either. I would hyave loved to have had my daughters ponies on trial before I bought them as you do feel a bit woolly buying a pony for your child to ride but to be honest I didn't even ask as I assumed the answer would be no as I myself wouldn't let one of mine go on a trial basis.

Apart from anything else two of the best ponies I ever had were little b*******s for the first month I had them so had they been on trial they deffo would have gone back and I would have missed out on 2 super ponies!!

Just to echo everyone else - don't do it - I fell for a sob story from a Mum/daughter combo when selling my last horse....they seemed to know what they were about, gave me teh name of teh reputable yard they were taking him to, lots of promises etc.

3 days later he was dumped back in the yard without them even telling us they were bringing him back, his legs were a mess (had told them he wasn't happy standing in a trailer for long & stipulated they had to put him in travel boots - they obviously ignored this) worst of all whatever they did to him (we suspect he was somehow turned over) he was dog lame, turned out to have damaged his sacroiliac & was on 16 weeks box rest....

don't do it, i let someone take my sons mare last summer and the day before they were due to pay they brought her back and dumped her in the field.
she came back minus 2 rugs too. i was then stuck for selling her before the winter and let her go for £1200 less than i was selling her for in the summer.

Thanks everyone! Don't worry im not going to do it. I'm going to say that they have to pay full price and then have a contract that they can return him within 4 weeks. If they don't like it they can stick it as i have other people interested.

Thanks again
