Putting a stop to the dog meat trade

Why?

Alec.

Because they want to make the dog meat trade illegal, as the article states the groups in thailand say that the dogs are usually stolen, then beaten and starved and boiled alive to make meat for customers from other countries (thai people don't eat dog meat)

The Campaigners are "biging up" their case. Cruelty is a subjective matter, and the cruelty in the Far East may be beyond our comprehension, but eating the meat of dogs is no different from eating that of cattle, sheep or horses.

In the West we live in a comfortable and often righteous world. Not everyone is so fortunate. Whilst we may be sickened by the behaviour of others, understand this; they may well be equally appalled at our levels of moral depravity, and stand in open mouthed wonder at our criticism and judgement of them.

Before we change the moral axis of the rest of the world, we should first consider ourselves and our own expanded sense of virtue.

I'm neither judging you equi, or those who campaign, but the very word 'Campaign' itself, has such a hollow ring to it.

Alec.

While I agree that if humanely killed it's not different the fact they torture the animal on purpose to make it more tender is wrong in every level and that's why i will support these actors bigging up their profile (not that I think that's what they are doing(

I too find the photos of dogs with their mouths bound closed to stop them from screaming or biting, and their legs tied together to be equally dreadful, but we have to bear in mind that these people who carry out what we see as atrocities, look at us and are equally shocked at our distress.

However sickening the treatment of these animals, I prefer not to think about it. There is caged and systemic cruelty of animals the world over, but those who are involved simply won't listen. I agree with you that it's horrible.

Alec.

I don't really care how they think of us. I don't agree with just sitting back and letting it happen as if it is not our problem because it is not our culture.

Seems a bit odd, coming from our country where high profile campaigners are promoting the horse meat trade, which is neither humane or properly regulated.

I signed and shared a while back, cant understand peoples objections to the campaign tbh, I imagine the ivory poachers are equally perplexed at us trying to save the Rhino and Elephant,

Its all about awareness and education, yes there are millions of cruelty cases going on in the world but if we all stuck our head in the sand nothing would ever change for the better.

I agree, it's a bit nuts although it's not I think the same high profile people .
I also tend to fight shy of these celebrity led lets give the natives the benefit of our superior views type campaigns .
There are people within these counties working in the animal welfare field .

I agree Dobiegirl.

I also agree that we do a lot of disgusting things in British farming too. We ought to know better, but it seems we don't.

I think my main thing with this is the fact they believe that the meat is nicer if the dog is, while alive, tortured and boiled and made to feel pain.

The british animal slaughter is not nice no, but it is not our belief that the meat is nicer if it is tortured and that just does not happen here. No matter how bad they are treated (i.e. made to travel, stressed out because of cramped conditions hit with blue pipes by arrogant heartless ******** etc etc) one thing is that they are not purposefully tortured for this belief. We may not be perfect, but compared to these people we're the bloody ritz.

I will never get the site of puppies in a boiling pot trying to get out or the sounds a freshly skinned animal makes out of my head.

We generally accept that animals which are unduly stressed as they approach the point of killing are, or can be, rather spoiled meat. I understand your point and that others seem to believe that stressed animals are somehow tenderised. It's rather beyond me too. I also think that it displays a distinct lack of humanity!

Alec.

As far as i know there are no human rights laws there let alone animal rights. So that really speaks volumes :(

The world is changing though, in China for instance where its part of the culture, young people activists are stopping trucks and rescuing dogs which are destined for the meat trade, if people can be educated to be more humane to both their fellow man and to all living creatures this world will be a nicer place to live.
