Im putting an ad up at local comp centres for a horse to buy, can you just read through the following ad and let me know if it sounds okay or is it too fussy?

Wanted sane & sensible allrounder horse to buy

16-16.3, 6-12 yrs, middleweight required, no TBs, ISH type preferred. to do RC sj, hacking, fun rides & possibly BSJA.

Must be 100% hack, on own, in company, on roads, catch, clip, load, shoe & have no vices. Must be forward going with brakes (not a kick along).

Loving experienced home awaits. Contact me with photos in the first instance.

I feel sorry you are ruling out TB's, mine is everything you have described.... and the ISH on our yard is a PIG :D

This is an advert I have had up (July time) and I am still getting enquiries!

Horse needed for 27 year old male. To be kept on a private yard in Northumberland (looking for horse within a 200mile radius) Yard has school, horse walker, full time employed stable hand/groom, large stables, all year turnout, 20 acres (for 7 horses). This really is a 5* home (pics available on request). We need something that is safe on the roads and relatively sane. Horse will be used for some schooling and hacking, there are oppertunites to hunt and xc. We are not looking for an all singing all dancing superstar, just something that is big, has a personality and enjoys human company. Please be sensible, my partner is 6ft2 and 14 stone, we need something that is at least 17hh. Budget of £2750. Horse will be subject to vetting. Thanks for reading :)

I've just sold one EXACTLY like that - except she was rising 4! She is now proving - to all the sceptics on a large livery yard -that a rising 4 year old CAN be far more sensible, better in traffic and all-round better behaved than the majority of horses twice her age!"

And I have another exactly the same - but she's on a 2nd viewing this week-end and will be gone after that!

TheEquineOak - did you find your paragon? My OH is a similar size to yours and - having recently hunted high and low for another hunter for him - I'd say you would either have to up your budget - or be prepared for some minor unsoundnesses. This sort of horse is VERY hard to find (and I aim to breed them!)
 
Why no TBs?

No I don't think you're being too fussy but you are looking for what everyone else wants. As long as you're prepared to pay a premium for it I'm sure it'll turn up eventually.

FWIW as JG says, I have a 5yo that is all of the things you have said you want (and has been since he was 4 as well) so maybe worth considering the younger horse but it depends how much time you want to invest in its education I suppose.

Completely agree - I have one rising 4yo that puts some older horses to shame as well.
 
No such thing as a perfect horse, I always like to loan with a view to buy, so you can find out what your getting, alot of horses show their true colours once you take them home, not every owner will allow a loan first, but the ones who care about the horses welfare and finding the right new home are more willing.
 
Sounds ok, not too fussy but you are after what everyone wants. I put up a wanted ad in the summer that was similar to yours. Nowt wrong with a nice 4/5 year old...would you compromise on age?

Why no TB's? I said this but was willing to take on a chunky TB type, as for me it was a size issue ( I don't like having something very slight). If it is a temperament issue for you then a lot of TB's are lovely and many ISH I know can be total pigs :)

Good to see you haven't put your budget up, some people could increase the price of the horse so it is still within your budget but horse isn't actually worth that much.

My advert sounded similar to yours....be prepared to be offered 14hh whizzy BJSA ponies or 20 year old unbroken TB's :)

Ive changed my mind about TBs but I want a middleweight one though. I went to watch some BSJA today at a local comp centre and the owner of the tack shop, who I know said they're not all nuts and are brilliant hacking out and not all have tendon/lameness problems.

Equineoak - I like that add, that reads better. Im not after an all singing and dancing horse just a nice sane RC type one that likes jumping.

Measles - I really like the sound of your mare, I just wish I could afford the cost of the flights & bringing horse back. I would up there like a shot if I could.

JanetGeorge - Id love to see one of your horses too but my budget wont stretch that far.

Not so quite as black and white as that. A caring owner needs to be sure who they're loaning to, it's a big risk putting your horse out on loan with a view to buy.

Utter rubbish!! so anyone who is not willing to let their horse out on loan doesn't care about the horses welfare? Far too much can go wrong when this happens. When I have sold, and when I do again, the horse will be properly tried, normally twice and have a five star vetting. I will also do the same when buying my next horse.

JG, when I'm allowed another and have the time for a youngster I will definitely be paying you a visit - that is if you have any under 16 hands....:D

We've got a 4 year old x race horse on our yard who takes the lead over the woosy irish hunters on the road, she'll go past anything!!! Bombproof for sure!!! Sometimes they (horses!) haven't read the book about what they are supposed to be like!!!!
 
I was trying to sell my horse last year, who was that description apart from being a warmblood. I had him advertised online here, and various other sites. Only got 1 phonecall about him, when they came they wanted to buy, but I didn't want to sell to them as didn't think suitable for him. I still have him, but now not sure if I want to bother with the hassle of trying to sell again in the spring.
 
Where are you and what's your budget? I know exactly this horse [a tb but he is nice and chunky!]

I care alot about my horses hence would never put them out on a loan with a view to buy.

Aha! You see right through me ;)

We found one but it was a sheer stroke of luck. His previous owner owns a huge yard in Scotland. She buys and brings on, then sells on as eventers. My poor boy has a slight problem with his SI (nothing serious) and the previous owner was told there MAY be a question mark over his future as an eventer. She has a reputaion for producing fantastic horses and she wasn't going to sell him to this field and risk it. She called me off the back of the advert, we viewed and bought...for £1300.

He was just completely worthless to her
 
It's a good start to your advert but you need to add more like Equine Oak has!

State what size, height, age of rider

Where the horse will be kept (although technically this is none of the sellers business most are wanting good homes for their horses) Some horses may not like a busy livery yard of say 40 horses coming and going, some maybe suited to a small yard of 5. State also whether all year turnout.

State the area you live in (not necessary on HH forum) but you can put Area : 'Cobbleshire' for HH.

What the riders abilities are and what they have done in the past.

And agree with JG what's wrong with a sane home produced 4 year old! And as others said TB's??? Not all TB's have raced! Had a gorgeous 4 year old TB who had never stepped foot on the track-totally sane and wonderful.

Maybe not state 'breeding not important but must be a weight carrier' for example.

Good luck with finding the perfect horse though!

foraday - Yes I will alter ad a bit. Nothing wrong with a home produced 4yo. Its finding them thats the problem. Im not after a perfect horse just a nice sound and safe one.

dont rule out tb's completely - they arnt all nuts! :)


ets - my 4 year old, is safe, sain and sensible - just needs schooling (a lot) but shes very honest and tbh i got (what i see!) a bargain with her

no idea what your budget is but you can get good bargains in the youngsters if your prepared to put the work in! :)
 
Yeah I have a fantastic four year old full ID who is an absolute star he is the brave one walking past objects my friends silly warmblood at 8 years old wont even go near...I think they are either sensible and geniune or not!
