Someone told me this is a good way to clean them?! Anyone tried it? Don't want to ruin my hat but aware I have sweated into it a few times ;) On a cool wash i'd assume?!

I would worry that the process could weaken the protective material inside the skull cap and therefore make it less safe. Can you not just wipe the lining with a tea tree oil wipe or something similar?

If it needs freshening up try putting one of those fabric freshner sheets that go in the tumble drier inside the hat. I keep one in the bag my hat is kept in and it doesn't smell - yet! Worth trying!

Hmm I thought it sounded a bit of a questionable idea! What do you guys do about cleaning hats

You could give it a whip with a baby wipe or use a hat cleaner, comes in a can and you give it a spray.

I don't clean mine :o, hence why it has an orange tide mark from my makcup:D

Interesting post, I sweat loads and end up throwing mine away - Can't actually see an issue with dishwashing as long as you allow to dry properly. I do my grooming kit this way (I don't tell hubby though!)

Lol grooming kit definately, and stirrups etc etc! I also do numnahs and boots in washing machines when OH not looking - did kill one washing machine with a particularly nasty fleece rug so stopped doing that now!

MASSIVE no no!

You shouldn't leave your hat on the parcel shelf of your car because the heat/sunlight will damage it, so the heat from your dishwasher would DEFINITLY ruin in.

I just pull the lining down and handwash mine.

A very big NO from me. It is the styrene lining which is where the main protective properties is in a hat. Sunlight, heat and compresssion of the lining seriously reduce the ability of this part of the hat to do its job preoperly - to absorb the energy of an impact.

Apart from this, the space between the shell and thelining will trap water which will eventually go mouldy.

whoops should have seen this before I did it but just put mine through the washing machine on a cool wash -lots of other stuff in hte machine to pad it out so dont think it got too bashed around - seems ok and there doesnt seem to be any compromise in its makeup - not much road road where i am so not too worried about it ..... and Im not too worried about cracking my scull on the sand surface we have. how can you get them tested

Is this for real?

hopefully a troll post...or in the nicest possible way is just suffering from impacts to head making her go fluffy...won't be the sand that cracks your skull...just the fence or a stray hoof..loose stone...I better not use my favourite phrase of the year & mention natural selection, but again..as its not my head, it's not my place to comment...;)xxx

Me too! Luckily it worked in my favour, OH bought me a machine solely for horse bits, got it plumbed out in tack room! :)
As for the hat..... Seems a rather silly idea to me! I use baby wipes!
