Morning!

As it's now rather cold when I get to feed Athena in the evening, is it OK to put warm water in her feed rather than cold water???

My horse used to love a bran mash, in those days it was seen as acceptable, these days I just put warm water on his normal feed, which consists of mostly spillers high fibre cubes so go mashy, he loves it, he'd prefer it with molasses in but he can't have that as he's prone to lami (well he's had it once) he is 31 by the way

I have a special bucket with a lid on, everynight I put a scoop of Readymash extra in it and take it home, in the morning i pour boiling water on it and take it to the yard the girls love their warm breakfast!

Ours no doubt will get warm feeds soon enough, we're far too soft, but it does smelly yummy to me, so must smell great to them.

Maybe the steam has a positive effect on their nostrils?! :D

Mine love it, especially the old boy. I often feed not just mine but a whole gang, consisting of Grandpa and his woolly baabies. They love http://www.britishhorsefeeds.com/fibre-beet and from memory (haven't needed to feed it this year yet but might do in the next day or so!) it takes 10mins in hot water (a big plus) or 1 hr to soak in cold.

They love it warm and sloppy! It was a god send in last winter, a huge bucket filled up under the bath then a few scoops of beet, it's ready by the time I've carted it out to them!

I also feed it when stabled, but hot water on any feed is yum. When it's really cold we put a kettle in each water bucket and some apple juice concentrate (just in one), and when really really cold, like last year, I'd happily cart big containers of warm water across numerous fields and ditches to make sure they keep hydrated. Thankfully there in a much closer field this year and there is a track I can wheelbarrow/drive it down!

I'm a meanie and never put warm water in their feeds. Their grass isn't warm, hay isn't, their water isn't. Each to their own though, if your horse or pony likes it that way then why not?

I dont think its necessary but if your hoprse is a bit chilly im sure it would be a nice way to warm them up. If it doesnt do them any harm why the hell not

Personally I don't purely because I figure in the wild a horse would never eat warm food so they're not designed for it.

They are also only made to run around in the wild and not to be stabled, rugged, ridden, lunged, fed mix, fed supplements, sugarbeet, have their manes pulled, tailed pulled .....
that was a silly thing to say if you ask me
they have been domesticated and so feed them warm food if they like it :D i dont know one that doesnt

My horses always have their feeds mixed with warm water, all year round. Asides from increasing appetite (often recommended and used by vets for convalescing animals), i think warm water mixes their feed far better than cold- they are on a predominantly chaff diet.

Each to their own but I don't think it does any harm.

Toffees little happy leg goes crazy when she has a warm dinner.

She hasnt got sugarbeet this year as although im paranoid about her arthritus she is a bit cuddly going into the winter. However when she has speedibeat her front legs lift up while she is eating :D

Arrr, that has just made me chuckle thinking of mine and her giddy happy leg! A big thank you, from my cold/flu ridden bed.

As for those who don't agree, well each to their own, mine all love it, I agree some don't. I see it as warmer food aids digestion and to be fair by the time you have it in the field it's not exactly boiling hot! i know my guys appreciate it. :D

I don't like mixing freezing cold feeds, so I use warm water. What I normally do is to boil a kettle of water, drain off the sugar beet soaking water, then put the drained beet back in the bucket, add hot water, mix and it is just the right temperature to mix into the feeds and has drained off any sugar.
