And my beautiful girl normally :(

Her and her field buddy got excited coming in, ran through the leccy tape, her fieldmate stopped, she didn't, skidded, panicked, jumped the gate, ripped it off its hinges and pulled the concreted post over, snapped the hinges, twisted the gate, ran two strides with it round her feet, then stopped and my OH freed her.

This is the gate:

To give you an idea, it is stood 100% straight at the other end.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be SO careful about the placement of your gates. This one was very slightly downhill from the bridge they come in over, I'm sure she wouldn't have tried to jump it if it was full height.

Still shaking. xx

How awful for you both but could have been so much worse, I know of one who broke its leg getting it stuck through the bars and had to be euthanaised

Thankfully she is ok! My horse did exactly the same thing when I first got her. Well, when I say exactly the same thing, we can't figure out what she did! We found her escaped in the next field one morning with the metal five bar gate flat on the floor. Somehow it had been lifted off the hinges, with the electric fence behind it (we didn't use this gate) in tact and undisturbed!! She had cuts just like yours and has Harry Potter scars on her hindlegs now. Can't figure out how she managed to lift the gate off the hinges because it has to be lifted up about 6 inches?!!

Terrifying

Darach tried to jump a 5 bar when he was 6 months old. He got his leg caught in the top rail and had to be freed by his breeder, who was fortunately present at the time  (He's since raised the height considerably and had no recurrences from other youngstock.)

I live in fear of him trying it here. For all I know, he has been jumping the gate, rather than the fence as I presumed when I've found him out of his field

Horses they love to scare you, I have a rising three filly who jumped a gate the first week I got her and has done a couple of times since she has also turned herself over jumping another wire fence trying to be clever when there was a gap right next to where she jumped.

This seems to have taught her to be a bit more sensible but she still jumps the dry stone walls in the fields I know as soon as we ride her she will probably cringe when I try to get her to jump a teeny jump as if she cant.

Its just horses being horses unpredictable at least you were lucky and I am sure she will be fine but it is very scary at the time, your stomach just sinks.

My internets not quick enough to DL the photos but by the sounds of it, she's a lucky girl.

The shock however, to you, is immense. Huge Hugs xxxx

My little girl scared herself stupid last year and took a wooden gate off its hangings and took off down the road. I had to choose between catching the horse that was left behind (but I had no headcollar), try to fix the gate, or follow the young 'un.
The horse left behind had stopped careering about and was standing in a corner so I took a chance on her staying in field and hoping if she left it, she'd be happy to graze, I shut the gate as best I could to deter her and then chased after pony in my car.

Pony stayed in field and other pony had not one scratch or swelling to her. She was not stiff or sore the other day. I was late for work and had to phone them, in major panic that I'd be late as pony had vanished. It brings it home to me constantly how lucky I was, but my God, the fear, shock and panic is so awful.

Nearly a year later and thinking about it still brings tears! Hope your girl isn't too stiff or sore tomorrow xx

Well I don't know what that baby pony is made of, but she's not even lame this morning! Very very slightly stiff but only if you're really looking for it!! Lol! Thank goodness.

Scary to hear everyone elses stories! Do more accidents happen in the field?? I always worry on hacks/competitions etc but the worst injuries she has are from the field! Xx
