can anyone help put my mind at ease. i have got a new mare and over the last two weeks she has had hair lose on her front left from the knee down, its now on her chest and its starting to puss. the vet came out last week and said it was mud fever and gave her a course of powder for a bacterial infection, but i dont think it could be mud fever, as she is stabled 24/7 and is not ridden in heavy mud, and mud has not touched her chest. I am looking up the net for answers, but nothing, has anybody else had this experienced????

Did she wear rugs before? It's possible that she has rainscald (similar to mud fever) caused by sweating if too hot in rugs or by rain running down the front of a turnout rug. It is odd that it has only affected the chest. Maybe if she was really sweating this could run down her legs??

no she doesnt wear a rug, and its not rain scald because she hasnt been out in the paddock yet. i have called the vet back as i have no idea what this could be so hopefully he can shed light on the situation.

Is she relaxed in the stable? A very long shot, but in the area you describe I have seen hair-loss as a result of self-harming in a 24/7 stabled horse. Hopefully not though!
