I worry more about my bay mare than the kids’ grey/coloured ponies. White pony stands out much more than any hi viz. We only have 3min roadwork on a quiet country road with traffic we know, so just wear tabards. On a main road or a fast 50mph road I would have hi viz on every bit of us!

I usually have a breastplate too, but given I hack on a black horse on busy, tree-lined residential roads with lots of speedy mums & OAPs, as well as in the woods, I may need to up my game. I'd like more showing a camera sign and the 10mph request - not that I think many will pay attention to it.

Photo below shows how much the hi-vis is needed!

I prefer the gallop one over the amigo, purly because it's more coverage :)

Oh i never read that it was mesh 😂😂😂

The Decathlon mesh exercise sheet is good for summer and not expensive if anyone's looking for additional high vis - we regularly get up into the 20s and I use mine all year round: https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/horse...-and-black/_/R-p-2475?mc=8297180&c=RED_ORANGE

If you are on the roads in poor light, the grey looking stuff like Weetherbeeta does is absolutely brilliant (I even glow walking down the dark corridor to the tack room), but I also have a Proviz reflect360 jacket that I got for cycling that is absolutely amazing. I have seen a huge, huge difference in when cars see me on the bike/horse and how much space they give me. Night and day. They're spendy but definitely a big enough difference to save your life, and one of their models is reversible with fluo yellow on the other side, so will do poor light and daylight: https://provizsports.com/products/switch-womens-reversible-cycling-jacket?country=GB

I'm tempted to get the Weetherbeeta wraparound in the reflective stuff for early winter mornings because the stuff is so good.

At the moment, I'm hacking in a zebra print flysheet, which is terrible for hi-viz. I've attached hi-viz streamers to the tail flap, always wear leg bands with it, a hi-viz fly bonnet, and hi-viz on noseband and browband.

When it isn't fly season, I don't step foot off the yard without a quarter sheet and a neckband, as bare minimum.

I always wear hi-viz work wear tops for hacking - so much cheaper than equestrian gear and better quality. I'll usually pop a hi-viz hat silk on, too, and have a variety of riding tights with hi-viz sections.

I tend towards orange, but will often have another colour (or two or three!) on as well, because different colours show up better in different conditions.

I don't hack in the dark, but I will go out when it's gloomy. If I do, I have an LED breastplate, LED strips on the quarter sheet's tail flap, LEDs on my hat, and often LED runner armband on her legs and my ankles.

Maybe I overdo it, but I don't want to give anybody the opportunity to claim they didn't see me.

It's really nice to see people's photos and see that everyone is intelligent and wears hiviz!
I always have a tabard and hat band on me then high viz breast plate and leg bands on the horse. He's not one for exercise sheets so that is a no.
I am now thinking of having a 'hacking bridle' a nice orange one...

I have had a yellow tabard for years now which is big enough to fit over a coat in winter and is fashionably "oversized" in summer. Never thought anything more of it until someone on our yard brought down some brand new fluorescent orange "workmen" type jackets (his work were going to throw them away after changing their branding - such a waste!). He gave us all one for hacking out in and within about a week I had had so many comments about how visible it was etc etc. It made me realise that my old yellow tabard probably isn't all that great after all!

I may look like I'm about to go and tarmac the M5 but it makes me happy that its working 😂 Just need to find a summer alternative now as it is a veeerrryyyyy warm coat.

You can get hi viz orange t-shirts from any of the work wear sites and they're cheaper than equestrian stuff!

What high viz do you consider to be 'enough'?

I have a tabard, exercise sheet, breastplate, & fly hood. As I only ride out in daylight hours, on roads with clear viewing, I tend to only use my tabard.

What's your view re high viz?
.
I wont wear just tabard as from a drivers view in a car, most of the tabard is invisible due to the horses head and neck. Also if we part company my horse has nothing on her.
I wear 1/4 mesh sheet summer, waterproof sheet winter. + hiviz brushing boots all round, hi viz i sewn to her ear bonnet and tabard on me also hi viz whip

As someone who drives on country roads a lot during daylight hours I can assure you that just a tabard is not always very helpful. Also depends on what colour it is. I see a lot with yellow on and quite frankly in some weather conditions it doesn't show up any better than not having it. Bright orange, pink or even red will stand out pretty well. If you are riding into the sun you will appear only as a silhouette to anyone approaching from behind. Only thing that can help in this situation are bright flashing lights. Leg bands are very helpful as they are in the driver's eyeline. Hat covers excellent too as they can give prior warning over hedges. I see some riders out who have the rear of the horse well covered but have forgotten the front. All I can say is the more the better.
So right, and so many don't realise that a horses head and neck covers most of the tabard from a drivers position if its a big horse or high head carriage, its all very well these stock pictures showing a rider from the back but from the front its not very clear. Screen shot from a video, the only way you can see this horse on the right from drivers position is the rug not the tabard

While we're here, anyone have one of these types? Wondering if it will flap around in canter, but seems less faff to put on than a breastplate that attaches to girth:

I have this, I find it amusing that it says 'Horse'

It's great, trigger clips both sides and adjustable sizing. Never rubbed and if it flaps I've never noticed.

Remember, you wearing hi viz makes it easier for the air ambulance to find you 😬😆

I have...
A yellow and orange mesh quarter sheet
A yellow and reflective tape harness made of thick elastic (for me)
Kramer neck strap
Yellow hat band with my camera attatched
Yellow crochet ears but she won't wear them
Yellow and reflective tape elastic leg straps (which came with the harness and were supposed to be arm bands)
A yellow and orange ribbon hanging tail wrap thingy for when it's too hot for the sheet
A ribbon thing for the end of my whip
-for winter
A yellow waterproof quartersheet
A polite rider jacket (these are excellent)

I'd really like more on her head but we don't use a noseband and can't see browband for all the floof.

I have a non high viz ride on summer fly sheet and I really wish I'd found a hi viz one that fit. I also have a non hi viz riding skirt, maybe that was a mistake.

I wear a front and rear view head cam and have made camera signs from black gorilla tape for my tail flaps and my back.

The only down side of hi viz is that I really don't have any nice pictures of me riding her, I'll be hacking somewhere beautiful on my stunning horse and all you can see is yellow and orange 😬

Most people on my yard stick on a tabard and go out. Some people will only go out looking pure country and mock you for the hi viz. Their choice I guess.

This pic is also why I have mostly orange as I think the yellow blends in too much with sunshine on grass and leaves.

The only trouble with these is that they seem to be sweaty to use. I ended up putting mine over a cotton t-shirt.

I carriage drive and go out looking like an accident in a christmas light factory. I have two red flashing lights on the back, with a yellow board between on the back of the seats. I got a cyclists tabard from Aldi which is controlled from a button thingy, it flashes a red bar/orange right arrow/orange left arrow/red !/red diamond. This is fastened onto the right hand side at the back of the carriage and I should have got two, one for each side. The pony has browband/noseband covers along with breast plate and leg wraps.

I keep meaning to put some spare leg wraps round the shafts but keep forgetting to do so, maybe this thread will prompt me to get this done.

Hi viz running tops from Sports Direct are good too, nice and cool but also bright. I've got running lightweight jackets from there too, again in hi viz.

I loved the flashing running armbands from Aldi, they made great leg lights. I used to hack round the farm in the dark (at my old place) and apparently could be seen from a quarter of a mile away. 😂 Flashing tabbard, breastplate and leg wraps, plus flashing lights on stirrups, tail and hat. Took bloody ages to get ready! 😂

I have a ‘please past wide and slow’ hi vis vest. A bit unrelated but I was court a few years ago now when a lady passed to close in the lanes and my horses bum knocked her new Range Rover.

It went to court as they couldn’t decide on liability. My hi vis was a key part, photos were provided to the judge and my barrister mentioned it a few times (and the wording) we won!

Luckily I don’t go on any lanes anymore but I’d definitely want some sort of exercise sheet if I did.
