Ok, so my horse is currently hunting in a American gag (2 reins), Grackle and running martingale. All this does look quite bad, but the fact is that he needs it!!

What do you class as over biting, too many gadgets etc.?

It's all good for happy hackers to say everyone should ride in a plain snaffle bridle, but TBF, thats very unrealistic IMHO.

Opinions??

My opinion? Couldn't care less what people use on their horses providing these items of tack do not have a detrimental effect on the horse.

Live and let live is what I say; there are FAR too many horse owners sticking their unwanted noses into other peoples business.

As long as people understand what they are using and how to use it, then I don't have a problem. I would rather see a rider in control with a gag, than a horse having its mouth sawn in half by a rider using a snaffle who can't stop, Not safe either for the rider or any nearby riders.

I think if horse needs it then so be it. No point in having it in something where ride is going to be hauling on its mouth etc. How I see it anyway.

Whoops didnt mean for post to sound so horrid lol. I think in the right hands and things then I dont see the problem with whatever bit and tack etc.

at the end of the day..who gives a sh1t???

as you say.."he needs it"..just go with that.....

I was thinking about this..the reason a bit is classed as more severe is because per amount of pressure you exert on a bit, it will put more pressure on the horse if it is a severe bit than if it is a mild bit, therefore hauling on a mild bit has the same action as touching on a severe bit? Just thinking through it theoretically.
I have been told any horse with a noseband on is obviously not trained correctly and said person evented all her horses with plain cavessons and snaffles-obviously because they were so well trained. Whopee...she declined to tell me her results....
I have a grackle on as it settles my lads head. I consider ponies in huge bits with spurs also an overkill.

I dont like to see bad riders using equipment they have no idea the severity, just because they think it will automatically put a horse in the correct outline etc,and make them look good!!My pet hate is people that stick a conformationally incorrect horse in something that is so obviously going to cause discomfort!!(ewe neck in draw reins
shocked.gif
as they think it will build the neck line???)

Haha yea that was me last year!

I'm still letting him do what he wants a bit because I'm worried about hurting him, but it's good to have the brakes there when you need them!!

I don't think it matters so long as the equipment is being used responsibly - not forcing the animal into an unnatural position, not hurting the animal etc etc.
I've seen children with lovely (forward going) little push button ponies being told to wear spurs by their instructor, I didn't like that one bit.

Dont get me started on kids with spurs

Been to that many shows where 5/6yr olds are flapping legs like crazy (thelwell style)with SPURS,ponies must either be soooo dead in its sides or just sooooo happy to please,if i was the pony i would have ditched em nd stomped on em for good measure!!!They come out the ring and slap it then for not jumping the course clear????Another post i know, told ya not to get me started on that, lmao

I think it's fine for someone who can ride to a decent standard to use what they deem necessary, but when it comes to people using stronger bits because their horse won't work in an 'outline' and kids with spurs and gags/combination mouthpieces to beat their poor ponies into submission - that's where I start to get annoyed. Don't get me wrong, I don't go round the shows attacking people with anything more than a snaffle & cavesson on their horse, but I do think a lot of people substitute riding ability and schooling for 'gadgets' or stronger bits, spurs etc.

*prepares to be shot down!!!*

ooo I know! Little brats! Parents that allow that should be shot IMO, I mean isn't it obvious digging metal into skin is meant to hurt? even horse-ignorant people should realise what is happening, no excuses.
I look back on when we first got coco and I couldn't ride - some of the pictures are horrible, I'm sitting on his back over jumps and pulling him in the mouth, but I didn't have spurs on and he was in a snaffle - my mum says she didn't comment because I wasn't strong enough to hurt him and we were only jumping like 1'6 but I still feel awful. Imagine what they will feel like, if they have any compassion!
Re child wearing spurs on good pony in the childs defence they didn't dig them in - but the fact remains that they werent neccessary and it was the /teacher/ who told the child to wear them, for no clear reason.

Little brats being the word, mind parents make em like that!!
I dont think spurs had been invented when i learnt to ride,
blush.gif
pmsl,ok maybe they had!!!I had to use my legs!!!!Strong ones i had then too,not any more
blush.gif
,i am soooo horse unfit now,i school my boy and feel 50,pmsl!!Slightly going off subject
blush.gif
lol!!x

i dont mind if the horse needs it, but i dont like people who put gadgets on their horse because either its fashionalble or b they cant ride it! lol

most people seek advice on how to correct a problem and sometimes a gagdet will help solve that problem. however, if that problem is caused by the rider then the rider needs to get some lessons to stop that problem becomming a habit
grin.gif

was that understandable? all so clear in my head yet not so on paper
tongue.gif

i have seen a pony with a crupper and a breastplate - simple way to solve problem? get a saddle that fits
