Motor has been suffering from a swollen Sheath/Oedema (??) this Summer, which I have always put down to him having to be restricted and not enough movement
confused.gif

However he has been 100% confined to his wood chip paddock for 3 days so far, due to a suspected bout of Laminitis and is on 2 Danilon a day now instead of his normal 1 (for other problems)

However bearing in mind, that he is now not moving too much, I noticed this morning that his Sheath is back to normal
smile.gif
.... so my question is; would the Danilon reduce the swelling/oedema and that it may not be related to his restricted turnout after all!?

Thank you peeps

Also in Vets

My veteran has this from time to time most recently during the hot weather we had a couple of weeks ago. I think mobility helps but the heat did seem to play a major part as his sheath did go down and back to normal as the weather cooled. He has had fly bites that did make it swell and become hot too which the vet treated with a/b's and bute.

Thanks for your response

... Motor suffers with fly bites terribly on his sheath and also patches, which I have always put down to his Sweetitch, which make it s so sore
crazy.gif
, so by the sounds of it, the Danilon may have improved his condition and most probably nothing for me to worry about

bute/danilon both have anti inflammatory properties so will reduce swelling. My vet prescribed bute for my horse knock he had to his knee alongside lots of cold hosing to reduce the swelling.

Danilon is an anti-inflamatory, so would reduce any swellings

I would be concerned by any swelling that has been there for a while, could be an infection or it could simply be a reaction to fly bites.

Bute is a pain-reliever which acts by preventing the nerve that picked up the pain from reaching the brain

Thanks all

I just thought it was odd that a 2nd Danilon a day, seems to do the trick in respect of his Sheath swelling
grin.gif
... it must be a bit like having an extra boost of the stuff help enormously

cuffey - motor is already a diagnosed cushingoid pony!

OOPs sorry struggle to follow everyone's horses/ponies.
But the swollen sheath is def a symptom
My old pony had this--vet very unconcerned but I knew it was different for him.
Cushings/Equine Metabolic Syndrome does not have exactly the same pattern for all horses.
I have had 3 all greys non-related, the only thing linking them is the grazing--known to be Selenium and Cobalt deficient.
All different in symptoms apart from excessive hair growth. One never had lami but battled tooth abscesses and was like a diabetic always hungry but could not maintain weight.
Another never had lami but the hoof growth was phenomenal, along with massive chestnuts and ergots.
The latest is borderline lami and has to be watched.
A lot more is known and more treatment can be given now.

Cuffey - Thanks for your reply and I am sorry to hear that you have battle with Cushings/Equine Metabolic Syndrome in 3 or your horses

Yes Motor is a Cushings Horse and this was diagnosed nearly 4 years ago (October 2005

) after going down with Laminitis at the age of 24
frown.gif

However after a very long struggle, he came sound and has been happy and Laminitis free, apart from one little scare in July 2007, and is being ridden again
grin.gif
... however after being shod on Friday, he showed signs of Laminitis

I have been very lucky, as he has not had lots of the problems Cushings horses suffer from
smile.gif
i.e skin problems, foot abscesses, tooth abscesses, extreme thirst, craving for food ... and his thick wavy coat, went once he was on Pergolide
smile.gif
.... although the last remnants of his Winter coat only went about 2 weeks ago
confused.gif

He has problems with his teeth, but I have always put that down to his age now (28) and has suffered a swollen sheath, on and off for a while .... **whispers** he has rather a large 'packet' anyway
blush.gif
... the main bit that is swollen, is at the bottom, which is why I have always thought it was Oedema
confused.gif

I am very interested to know that this may be Cushings related and I will endeavour to read more into this ... and if you have any further advice, it would be appreciated greatly

Thank you again

Having got one with sweet itch I often have to deal with this problem

I coat the sheath with metanium which is a nappy rash cream which is stickier than sudocreme. This helps reduce the midge bites.

Water tablets (like the ones you buy from boots) also help reduce the fluid build up, and are more effective than bute for this sort of problem.

Thanks for that help, it is very much appreciated

We have one livery who gets a swollen sheath every year, the first year the vet gave him bute and antibiotics thinking it was an infection, the last two years we have just kept an eye on him and over a week it's gone down on it's own.
So your horse's swelling may be totally unrelated to his current problems, but the medication he's on is to reduce swelling so that's likely the reason I would have said.

Do you know if there is a "bean" up there? Only because my own experience of a badly swollen sheath was down to that, once it was removed, with the help of bute (can't remember how much now, it would be about 3 years ago) it went down to about normal after 3 days and more turnout that was usual. Just a slightly different tack for you to think about...
