Hey guys

For those of you in the know...

My fiance, little boy and I have just moved out to a small holding and he's keen to get a quad. I'd love to surprise him with one for his christmas :) Only problem is I don't know the first thing about them. Anyone point me in the right direction as to what type to go for. Is it possible to get one for around £500?

A "proper" quad will cost more than £500. I bought mine 2nd hand almost 10 years ago for £1,000. It's a Honda Big Red, I use it for chain harrowing and towing a small trailer.

No idea about the "sporty" type though, never looked, as they would not have been up to the work required!

It would just be something he can go for a play round the farm tracks and in the woods on. We have a garden tractor we can use in the paddock for harrowing etc.

If we're looking at more like £1000 maybe i'll forget about the present idea and we can just buy one.

You could get a smashing 50cc for your little boy for around £400 even with a remote control to cut the engine, but definately not a good adult one for that price.
 
Please, please be careful. I have heard of too many accidents - fatalities - off quads, either overturning in which people are crushed and broken necks when clothes have got caught in the wheels. They are "fun" to ride, but they are a working tool. The machinery dealers say that now farmers/estates etc are buying the "mokes" a sort of mini pick-up type thing as they are much safer. There are training courses available now as there was such a shocking accident record.

A new, full sized quad is anything from £5,000-£6,000 so you wouldn't get much for £500.
 
Personally if I had children I would love them waaaaay too much to buy them something as inherently dangerous as a quad. Not meant to sound eurghhh but they dont have the ability until around the age of 12 to really assess and process the high speed risk well enough, and even adults get caught out with quads. And off a purpose built track the bumps and tree roots could be lethal.

I would stick to the lawnmower and if you really want to get him something get a mule/gator type which are 6 wheeled, slower and longer bodied and will also enable him to help around the place too instead of just burning endless rubber and fuel :-)

Maybe then when an appropriate age (early teens) get him some professional quad training and get him a quad of his own?
 
I don't know how old your little boy is but overhere (France) children aren't even allowed to ride pillion ( on a proper 2 seat quad ) until they are 12 years old, so perhaps look into that first?
We've just bought one, to be used as a working tool, and it set us back well over 8000 euro's, so not sure what your budget will buy you second hand in the UK.
Also, posters are quite right that they can be quite dangerous, therefore insurance is very expensive...

Just reread your post and am not sure now who you'd be buying the quad for, is it your little boy or the big one? :-)
 
I have a Polaris Sportsman Big Boss - new they are £8,000 + I couldn't be without this machine!

It has 6 wheels with a container over the back 4 wheels.

I use it as a wheelbarrow and even went to the village shop in it last year in the snow!

Bear in mind that if you are getting an ATV for fun then they can be dangerous machines, very easy to roll.
I bought a small but powerful ATV for my nephew and the rules was that when being ridden a helmet had to be worn. This bike had a suppressor in the form of a screw, took him about three rides before he found out what it did and instead of driving at about 10 m.p.h. he was whizzing past the window doing about 25 m.p.h.
 
Whatever you do don't get a Chinese one......they're crap. I bought a Yamaha Breeze for the kids when they were younger. It's automatic and easy to ride the engine is only 125cc. You could look out for a second hand one. Some people say why buy a secondhand Japanese one when you can get a new Chinese one? the reason will become clear after a couple of weeks or when you need parts.

Please think long and hard about it.. personaly I think they are very dangerous! Ive raced motocross , enduro and done trials on two wheels , friends have had them and been badly hurt by them, they are heavy and unlike a 2 wheel bike if you get into trouble you dont fall off you get tangled up and they roll over and over unlike a 2 wheel bike which just falls over !!! not too bad on flat land but deadly on hilly terrain..... I would look at an off road gocart or a 2 wheel motorbike far far safer IMHO...
 
Sat here smiling to myself about the outcry of quads being 'dangerous things' being posted on a forum concerning probably one of the most dangerous sports you can do. Horses :rolleyes:
