Hi everyone,

Very excited about buying a quad before winter sets in! It will mainly be used for taking muck to the heap, taking small bales up to the field & moving fence posts around etc.

Just wondering what size trailer people use for this kind of work? Also, any features I need e.g. tipping, dropping sides etc. Would be really helpful to know what I need to think of!

Given all the rain we’ve had already, I’m also a bit worried about it getting stuck in the field as it is hard to access & very hilly! Does this happen & if so is how easy is it to rescue a quad? I am a bit paranoid after getting the 4x4 stuck in our old field & having to get my mate to tow us out in his tractor – I have never lived it down!

Thanks all!

D.

I have a Swaledale trailer 6'x4' with a drop tailgate. The sides are about 35cm high. It is a convenient height to fill when poo picking but it has to be shovelled out to empty. I tried a tipping trailer but found the sides too high for easy emptying of the poo scoop.

Summer work and 2 wheel drive quad is fine but in wet claggy weather in winter I found I needed a 4 wheel drive one. The drawback of the 4 wheel drive is poor turning circle and it chews up the yard more when turning

We use Ifor Williams 6' x 4' trailers for muck, it's amazing how much muck you can get it but be careful you don't overload as a full one weights a lot. We use the low ratio box and 4 wd when towing. Wash off the underside after trips to the muck heap as it's easy for corrosion to set in or the brakes to seize from the muck. Be careful to avoid really wet or muddy areas as they can get stuck and it's easy to burn the clutch out trying to free them - one of my staff did this yet again last week after heavy rain. It's far better to dig it out or get it towed than have an expensive bill. Ours work hard but we now have a bigger trailer and tractor for the winter although the quads are still in use for the summer and harrowing arenas etc.
