Quality/comparison different feed companies

I need to change my horse's food to something suitable for an old horse that could (but not yet) become laminitic. I do not live in the UK so mabe do not have the choice you have. In the dog section of this forum there was information on quality of many different makes. Does anything similar exist for horse food? I am currently checking out Dodson & Horrell "safe and Sound" and Spillers "conditioning fiber". The horse in question is retired, old and looses weight easily.

Sorry I don't know of such list but both are good brands IMO. You could also try "straights" : linseed is good for conditioning, plain oil from the supermarket, black oats, alfalfa pellets if he is OK with that (I don't think you'll be able to find grass nuts). Does the horse have cushing/PPID?

He has Cushing, I do not know what PPID is.

Have you emailed Spillers for advice? I know you can get their feed from Saunders. Might be worth a try?

If you have access to any of the large brands you won't go far wrong

have a look at st.hippolyt feeds. They do a feed which was originally designed for ems / cushings horses and my two are both on it and do amazingly well. It's called equigard. Most of the feed companies now include soya (which my boy can't tolerate) so I've had to look at ingredients a lot but they absolutely love their food now and are looking really good for the end of winter. It looks expensive but you feed so little (1/2 scoop morning and evening (1kg a day) with my two) it works out a good price.
