We're looking to get a new saddle for our TB and were all set to get a traditional tree saddle made to fit Jack..however, we went to HOYS this year and had a look at Quantum saddles. They're neither tree or treeless and have a special adjustable bridge which allows the saddle to change shape with the shape of the horse.

Anyway we had a representative come out and measure Jack and we're quite interested but the saddle is £2700 and I'm wondering if it's really worth the money!? It's a fairly new company so I'm just wondering if anyone has got a Quantum saddle, or know anyone that does, and what you think of them?

Any opinions would be good

thank you!

Hmmm!! I saw one being fitted at Bramham and wasn't impressed I am afraid. Was it J that came out to you? They strike me as being a bit like the Wow saddles, excellent in theory, but in practise there is alot to go wrong

The short answer is I don't think they're worth the money... If it were me, I would be waiting a little while to see whether they're as great as the marketing says or whether like several other made to measure brands, they are actually more trouble than they're worth. Also, if the saddle ends up not fitting, can you sell it on? You can usually sell on a Butet or Devoucoux (same kind of money) but not sure whether people will go for a 2nd hand Quantum.

It was a woman called Laura who came out to us - she was very good but then she's meant to be! I just think it's a lot of money to pay when a made to measure tree saddle will cost us £750. And even if we ended up buying a second one, it would still come out cheaper! Does anyone know how often the tree saddle will need to be re-flocked etc?

i really like the idea of the quantum but will be waiting 2 or 3 years before deciding whether to purchase to let them iron out the any initial teething problems.

kit279- i think the idea is that as they aren't treed they can be made to fit any horse and are totally adjustable. so if you sell your horse, you can get it made to fit new one, or if you sold 2nd hand buyer can get it refitted

actually one of the reasons i was put off at the moment was that you can't swap it from one horse to another without it being adjusted.

There are several saddles on the market now with adjustable gullets such as the Bates for far less money and work just as well. I have a Bates and it is super. And if you buy a new horse and have a Bates saddle then just get your saddler in to change the gullet over for you. The Quantum are just a new theory on the gullet changing system and are not worth the money.

After all its the way your horse is trained and the way you ride it which will determine whether it wins or not - not what make of saddle its wearing as long as the saddle is properly fitted and comfortable for the horse.

I know that one of the Quantum reps worked for Devecoux previously!!

trot, sorry have to disagree re. the gullet change, they have a completely different type of tree which makes it a very different product from the "gullet change" products already out there. The ex-devoucoux rep is their main fitter and sales person,

as a result I would be very cautious...

yes but the Bates has set widths- Narrow, Medium, Wide, XWide etc; the Quantum is a bit more complex than that and they can change the entire shape of the saddle, not just the front part like a Bates.

i will be watching with interest over the next few years to see how they do- but i really like the principle of the saddle in theory

My only comment is that they are not really proven, at least you can see many wows out and about.

I think £2,750 is quite a lot for a saddle that may not work! (I though £1.500 for a wow was steep, but more doable!)

KATB !!! You seem to have it in for J ! But I would agree with katb that the Quantum is not like the Bates it has two carbon fibre fins that spread the weight of the rider. The bates has a tree and has points to the tree and that results in pressure mounting on the horses shoulders. It is also rigid where as the quantum flexes. You get this explained to you by a guy called George i met on the stand. James seems to be dealing with development and marketing with lorna being incharge of sales? At the end of the day you can get saddles "made to measure" from £600 all the way up to the french CWD saddle that is massive in the states but costs $7500 ! which by my maths is about £5000. It all depends on what suits you and the horse the most and what your needs are. Quantum has alot of ground to make up interms of convincing people that the product is here to stay but it looks to be encouraging so far. I've seen a few pros out in them this summer! and although the sceptics would say that they are paid etc you can say that about any saddle company! I thought they launched the new sadddle at Hickstead international at the end of July so if you saw one at Bramham it must have been the original prototype.

Nothing against J at all

By all accounts he is lovely, just as with the Wow saddles, their beauty is they are so adjustable, which also means their down fall is also that they are very adjustable.... so there are a lot of different factors to get right... and one little inbalance cant cause a lot of damage, as people have found out with the Wow saddles! I therefore wouldnt want anyone but the VERY best fitting them

The one I saw at Bramham just had alot of movement between the horses back and the fin, and I accept it may have been part of the fitting process, but I will take some convincing and will want to see alot of them out before considering them

By all means their pliance testing results and statements on the website are very impressive, and if it continues to look as positive when it is used more extensively, it will be a very exciting bit of kit.....
The saddles have been launched and on sale since february.. so doubt it was a prototype I saw

I'm resurrecting an old thread I'm afraid.

Was there a more recent consensus about the Quantum saddle? I've got the opportunity to buy one for my youngster.
