quarrystone stud has anyone heard of them

hello - a bit of a long story!
My mare came from there, she had been illegally road raced, pumped with steroids and bute, fed bicarb to stop her lactic acid and suffers from terribly from a bad stomach now, let alone when a vet goes near for a blood test ect she goes spare - double barreling him and throwing me in the air! She a total gem - until you do something she doesn't want to do. i didn't buy her direct from him, i bought her from another dealer who bought her off the 'stud' shes illegally pin fired as well, along with a passport which she was newly given at her age of 6 to hide something, no parents or age on the passport, no history. all hidden! Shes been to 3 auctions within 10 months - for me to then buy her at her 4th through someone else at only 250 as they just wanted rid of her! I dont know them personalty, but they have totally destroyed the trust and broken all boundaries of horse common sense. not happy with what they have done to her. she has such a gentle face its just awful knowing what she's had. at the age of 7 shes been pin fired, a ridiculous thought!

If you're very very careful and know your stuff they occasionally have good horses. If you have ANY doubts about your ability to judge an animal AVOID.

I found a grand little horse there years ago - he was a total wreck, matted coat, thin, shaking at the back of his stable and used to leap-buck-shoot forward when first mounted as he expected to be hit. Three months TLC, no riding (foot and mouth forced that, though in hindsight it was a good thing) and six months essentially rebreaking (he was only six), he turned into a gorgeous, happy, generous horse, who is now doing very well out on the pony club circuit with a mother-daughter combination. It was damn hard work, though, and I hit the deck hard a couple of times in the process. I'd agree with the blood, sweat, tears assessment - even if you get a good one!

This has obviously come up again I guess coz they've (yet again!!) changed their name; but at least its got the "Quarrystone" bit in - so people can know to avoid it.

I've previously posted on this thread so won't repeat what I said there, but if you go to a yard and you're allowed to have ANY vet as long as its on their "list" (LOL) then you know to get outta there PDQ. The reason given for only having a vet on "their" list was, LOL LOL LOL Elf N Safety!!

I think there was an issue a few years back where they basically sold a horse to this woman which badly threw her and she took them to Trading Standards and won the day, so they then changed their name. Now they've obviously changed it back again!

About as fishy as a dead mackerel I'd say.

Avoid.

Please don't. I have seen so very many dangerous horses come from there over the years. it really isn't worth the risk and you are just funding further equine misery by buying from them.

I think I may know this horse. My friend had it for a while before sending it back. If its the same one then it broke one of the dealers grooms arms. Pm if you like.

I bought a 16hh tb mare "never been raced" local level showjumper from them, my friend who was born with disfigured hands bought a 15hh haflinger 10 year old plod..

turns out i had a fresh out of racing mare who had been doped and buted up, she had a very painful rotated pelvis!! We kept her as i adore her but it did cost us £1500 + to get her to where she is now!! Spose i could reconise she was a sweet mare who would try anything for her rider and has a lot of potential however that was luck..

my friends turned out to be a 25+ year old with terrible navicular, she kept falling over which is obviously not good/safe for my friend!! She was sweet but extremely head shy and we guessed she's been imported from Belgium for meat and they were trying there luck to sell her as a riding horse! Was deffo heavily buted up!!

The 7days money back garentee is a load of rubbish! He will blame you for whatever is wrong with the horse and will try and get out of it as best he could! I was lucky with mine but my friend had a lot of upset because of hers, she took them to caught and they did refund her and take betty away.

I do no that they were arrested after finding lots of illegal veterinary substances on the premises and huge amounts of cash were found!

AVOID THESE CROOKS!

i think i remember seeing this halflinger mare up there when buying. he had said he had problems with the owner and had it back as it was going to court? (if i remember correctly thats what was said).
Although i did buy a lovely coloured mare, ive had her 5 years now and she has never got lower then a second in the show ring! i also had a friend who had a hunter of him who is amasing! it is touch and go whether he will have the horse back he usually offers a sway instead of money back. i would buy another horse of him you just have to know the signs and go in with your eyes wide open!

Agree that, as with most dealers, take someone with you and ask plenty of questions. I have 3 that came from there, 1 ride and drive cob I've had for 12 years s who turns her hooves to most things, a ride & drive heavy for 10 years, again a very sane, sensible mare, and a TB/ID for 8 years again as described and a pleasure to own. Yes there were some unsuitable ones there, but a polite 'I don't think so' and a reiteration of what you want usually cuts through the ***p!! All mares and not one BOGOF!! on second thoughts I've been cheated :-) Best thing I find with dealers is to phone and inquire what they have and what their opening hours are, say you haven't quite made up your mind what type or size you really want, then turn up and ask to see several, that way you're not likely to be shown something drugged.
I have also bought privately on many occasions and must say I think you have to be even more careful lol!!

Just the name puts the fear of god into me!! 😳😳 as others have said, if you fancy a free "I wonder what the foal will turn out to be" them it is the ideal place. If you are a sucker for a sob story then it is definitely NOT THE PLACE TO GO. There are so many welfare cases it would be hard to not feel sorry for the sad and sorry cases 😢😢

Could be wrong as had tv on in background but I think this place was involved in a passport scam featured this morning on bbc's fake Britain.

We have the kindest most lovely quarrystone horse.
He is called quarrystone wizard, we brought him from Leominster last September as A 4 year old. He has a few issues but is kind and genuine.

Pole
Barge
and not touching
;)

Ditto this. "Plague", "like", "avoid", "the".

Do a search on here under Quarrystone Stud; the last time I looked there was LOADS of stuff in the archives.

I went to see some horses there a few years back. One of the most obvious dodgy things was that you could have ANY vet to do a vetting, as long as it was one of the ones on their "list". LOL.

Um, dunno why this thread has re-surfaced now???? unless someone has picked it up from the archives or sommatt???

I bought an 8yo Belgian Bred Haffie Mare from there. nearly 4 years ago.

She was a real mess when i got her mentally. I have since managed to trace her history as her passport was genuine (and from what i have heard that is rare)

Now i did have her vetted by one of their vets as she had a nasty scar on her hock which they couldnt tell me about.

i tried her a few times when before i decided to buy her. I had some friends pick her up for me as i couldnt get there. On the way home she flipped out in the trailer and got both front legs stuck over the breast bar and a foot caught in the haynet. They didnt tell me any of this until they got her home. She has major seperation issues, I can hack her out on our own and take her away from other horses ok but she wont stay on her own and you cannot take any horse way from her (they didnt tell me this ) She has sweet itch again not told.

I managed to track down her history to a farm in Belgium who i contacted and luckily i found out that she had been bred there and lived there until about 12 months before i bought her. They has an Agent of theirs arrive at the farm looking for horses to buy to sell to England My mare was one of them because of the sweet itch. She had a foal and i believe that the weaning of her foal is the reason she has such issues with seperation.

The Farm is a lovely laid back quiet place and the horses are well looked after as i was invited over there and visited 3 years ago. They told me that They sold her for €700 and I bought her for £1400. They told me that i would have got a very nice mare with out sweet itch for what i paid for her and that next time im looking for a haflinger then i should go straight to them.

I do believe that all of her problems have stemmed from being at the dealers yard. In fact that when i spoke to them 2 years later about my mare, they remembered her. I believe that they had her with them for about 7 months and long enough to get to know her (What ever that meant). so out of 12 months 7 of those were at the dealers yard. which says to me that they either couldn't sell her of that she kept being returned. I have since found out that she has been in several homes and didnt sell in Exeter Market.

She has turned out to be the best little mare that i have owned and even though she is still a stress head at times. i will never sell her. By we have definitely had out ups and downs (me being airlifted to hospital due to her rearing up and going over with me out hunting- my fault i fell backwards and pulled her over).

But ive put alot of blood, sweat ad tears into her.

So be very careful.

I wouldn't change my mare for anything but i most definitely would not have bought her if i had been told eveything about her.

Cookies if you got through all of that

OMG....... sorry, have just read this. When I went to Quarrystone I tried out two horses, a Haffie gelding and a mare. Think this may have been the mare I tried; one of the things I remember about her was that she went a bit mental when I tried to dismount, for some reason.

I did hear after that, that the two Haffie's had been touted around Exeter market and not sold, apparently the gelding had a special line in explosive bucks.

But I'm glad that the mare got an obviously good home..........

That name really did ring the bell for me and I was certain I read about them some time ago, just couldn't realy remember where. I was however pretty sure it wasn't anything good so I decided to check it...Guess what I found.

http://www.horsemart.co.uk/news/horse-dealers-from-devon-found-guilty-of-fraud/3710#dtcbROQGqihR5eS6.97

It seem then that you have to tread really carefully if you are planning to do business with them! This is also visible in their business performance, check the data:

http://www.bizdb.co.uk/company/quarrystone-stud-limited-06842281/

Do notice how their Net Worth and Total Assest started to plummet after 2013? Exactly after the dealers were found guilty of the fraud.

My answer would be - avoid!

Guess they must have got under many people's skin to get so many unfavourable opinions.

If that were all.............. LOL...... they're a thoroughly disreputable concern basically and I know of at least one incident where they were taken to Trading Standards.

Unfortunately they've given all dealers yards a dreadful reputation.

They use people who live/work there to sell the horses privately usually on adhorse. Gets horses from horse fairs in Ireland amongst other places. Do sometimes have the odd good horse. Wouldn't from personal experience trust anything they say or do. Most shady bunch I've ever met

Would anyone know what name they are trading under now please as shortly about to advertise my mare and live in the same county. Wouldnt want them contacting me

I think they mostly bring dirt cheap horses from the continent and ireland (slaughter bound I assume) so if your mare is going for okay money you should be fine.
