Got home last night and saw that farrier had changed my horse's shoes to ones with quarter clips in front.

Why would he have done that? to make them stay on longer? Or because he's seen the wear of the previous ones and seen he needed a new type of shoe?

it does help with lateral movement stabilisation. Does he have cracks that would get in the way of toe clips? Also a reason. Or are his feet a little splayed? Quarter clips can sort of "pull" the hoof together when re-shaping/balencing

if his feels are a little down, or he's flat footed could be a reason. My farrier explained that with a toe clip, as the hoof growth down at the toe, it can pull the support of the shoe forward and away from the heel, 1/4 clips allow the toe to grow out and break over naturally.

Normally helps with flat footed, low heel type foot conformation. Allows the shoe to be set slightly further back toenable toes to be kept short, increase heel support and breakover point
