As I'm reasonably hopeful we might get some (slightly tatty looking!) plaits into roo for saturday's ode, I'm
thinking we might go all out an plait tail, chalk white bits and do quarter markers, but having never done them before, what's the best way? I've got cheaty stencils, he's Irish x WB so we have a clover and he's actually registered Scottish sports horse so might have a thistle one side and the clover the other.... But do I just lay the stencil on him and brush hair wrong way with damp brush? Is it that easy? Should I hairspray to get it to hold?!
Thought might as well get him looking as smart as poss and at least get some photos :) as we aren't likely to come home with a rosette!!

I personally prefer the more traditional quarter marks, so if it was me I would do three stripes and sharks teeth :)

But do what you like :) although I would do the same one both sides don't do two different ones it would look odd haha!!!

If you do use them can you make sure you brush out the line you get from where the square outside bit of the quartermarks is. It annoys me when you can see that outer square :p :p :o

Do the proper ones by hand, not the little squares! Youtube for good instructions- I can do reasonable ones on Reg having studied the clips :)

I did these free-hand;

Just dampen and then comb towards the tail, then use fine tooth comb to comb the squares perpendicular (eg towards ground), use a little spray gel or hairspray to try hold (or I use a little mousse on the coat before putting the squares in) the pattern.

Some really good videos on Horse Hero if they are still there. :)

I think for sports horses the correct quarter marks are three big rectangular blocks up and down the quarters? Although for non-showing purposes anything goes that you fancy really! :)

as above but use brylcream :)

Ooh ok if not too difficult might try and be 'correct' - anyone got a pic of the right ones for sports horses?

Just to add a question, is there a certain *type* of horse that you quarter mark and what if any types do you not quarter mark?

I've never done quartermarks on my Arab ;) but that's mainly because I think they look better on bigger stronger hindquarters! Although maybe once I know how to do them I will.... Managed another 3 plaits tonight with no drama so 9 down 7 to go and still have 2 days left!

I suppose any horse can carry quarter marks, although it is not 'correct' to put them on a native or anything that isn't shown plaited, apart from arabs which are shown with quarter marks :) (or is now very popular to show arabs with quarter marks)

there are different quarter marks for different 'types' too so a hacks would tend to be shown with a small checker board or diamond checker board + sharks teeth and the 'stripe' down the bum

a riding horse (+arabs) can be shown with a variety or different ones to suit the shape of the bum from the checker boards above to the 3 stripes to a V shape + sharks teeth and stripe to finish it off

a hunter will be shown with either 2 or 3 stripes + sharks teeth and a finishing stripe :)

they are the main showing types although it is fashionable to do the creative marks in dressage and eventing now so for instance alot of dressage people put the music notes in a free style :)
