What classes would you use quarter markers for?
I am entering a potentialsports horse / youngstock class in a couple of weeks, can / should I use them for this?
How do you do them with out stencils, any tips?
 
You use a comb (with some teeth removed) for checker pattern on rump, and a stiff body brush for 'sharks teeth' triangles down hind leg. No idea if you do them on youngstock or not.

I have a stencil that I used on Axey but always ended up brushing them out as they look a bit rubbish on him. You're welcome to have the stencil and have a go on Alee, quarter marks come out much better on bay horses than grey ones!
 
Well, if you do use them, I hope you have more success than I have had in the past year! I have tried in vein to do them on Ralph and have ended up brushing them out. FMM seems to be the expert on them.

The top people seem to get them so polished, I've tried lots of water and little water and end up in a mess!!!

The answer to your question is......its up to you if you want to use them. If you have a hunter type (young or old) then you should try the bold stripes down the quarters and bold shark's teeth. If he is hack/riding horse, then you can go for the stencils (they do work) or small comb and fine shark's teeth.

I would not worry about them for your first competition, test the water and see how you go....I'm doing dressage this year....no plaits...no shark's teeth = no stress

damp the quaters, brush the hair towards the bum several times with a damp brush, then put your pattern in with a cut down plastic nit comb (use it to downwards rather then towards the back end as this gives much better results). go over each square several times with nit comb. set in place with lots and lots of gold label quater mark spray and hairspray.

for sharks teeth, again with damp brush this time brush the hair downwards, then sweep an arc from front of leg to back, and then a diagonal one down (to create the sharp edge) go over it several times, then repeat for 2 more teeth. set in place with hairspray and goldlabel quater marks spray!
 
wet the coat down, use a comb, i use a cut of hair comb as its so fine, do you desired marker ( v, chess board or blocks) then use a brush to do ur sharks teeth, and YES do them for young horse classes
 
Pocket are you saying that you dont plait for dressage???? We always have and I know very few (apart from those with natives) that dont.
