also this was 1st time using stencil will do them neater on the day

thanks!!

I'm not sure he's the right type for those tbh, although I don't know. Do you show him as a hack or a riding horse?

Why don't you practice with a body brush or metal comb? You can also make yor own stencils using cardboard here is mine with a body brush takes seconds

This video is what I used to teach myself. I can now do them really nicely, just took lots of practice.

I'd be inclined to leave it for now and wait for his poverty lines to go a bit more...

i like that one! i have seen the triangle one but thought that was more for dainty show ponies?

hmmm ill try that hunter style one considering hes being shown as a hunter

Not really appropriate....but last summer when we played in any finals we had silver stars quarter marks!

Think the triangle would be better or maybe the ones I've done as he has not got a big back end just practice, also tip get a water spay bottle put some baby oil in with water and spray the back end.

For the teeth brush the hair down the stand behind take your brush back the down to get the point.

how did u get the stars silver they are fab!!

i will try the triangle ones ill turn stencit around and have a play will also try the ones you have done see what looks right. he doesnt have the biggest bottom in the worl but its a strong one :)

anyone know what a poverty line is?

The lines running down the back of his thigh/ rump.

You can just see them here, when ideally you want it to look like:

I think. Just what I think, sorry. If you put quarter marks on, you're advertising his bum, and if it's not as peachy as it should be (the grass has been so crap as of late and everything) then I'd just leave it...

hes never had a peachy bottom always had this very defined bum....

i thought it was normal hes a exracer and never had a let dwn period longer than 4 months since then hes been in work......

i make him work properly the majrity of the time even on hacks unless we have having a hooley... hes always been kept extreamly fit... hes got a good jump on him too and good engine... how do i get him bum peachy and round?

i thought the muscle was a good thing?!

I have to agree with lolo, quarter marks should highlight and show off and compliment the area. I wouldn't really want to be showing off the horses backside when it needs more muscle.

That's not muscle, that's lack of muscle- his bum should be fairly continuously 'smooth' unless he's using it at that moment in time... The horse in the photos is an ex-racer too, and this year we're trying to get more condition on him for showing as he did look a little poor in the class (no horses were fat, he was just eventing shaped, not showing shaped!).

As an aside, your boy isn't a hunter unless he's a lot bigger than he seems. The horse in the photos I posted is too small to be a hunter...

Im still going to practice quarter marks so tha ks for those who have helped me a little althougj im still wondering how higj or low the onin the pic should be....

No hes nt a typical hunter but i habe shown him as one and judge really liked him and plaved him 3rd out of 8 and said be would make a nice little ligjtweight hunter jusylt needs more top and a little rounder....so im going to continue to show at this local show as a hunter.

Hes a poor doer anyway but just been turnd out 24hrs witj 2 feeds a day so should look rounder soon. I dont habe the facilities to school proper have to do it on grass near by when weathers good. Hes only started being schooled properly the last few months so i cnt expect to see much of the correct muscle yet hes debeloping topline though as he is no lonher as hollow behind the withers or along bis back.....

Racehorses have the same povetty line as u say ut they have plenty of muscle and there bk end is there engin...all the horses i know tbat are of same fitness level mine is have the same bottom slightoy rounder for differnt breeds but they still have the same muscle on there botom.

Could it be marleys just eventing fit....not show condition? Vet said hes fit and heathly and weight is perfectly fine so im not worrys just womdering now

Marley remember most show horses are fat, obese at times.

If you vet thinks your horse is fit and healthy I'd be happy with that

Personally that's my preference over lard arses. I hate seeing fat animals.

So I'd not worry yourself.

I use a dog flea comb and draw 3 straight lines down my horses bum, it's subtle but enough.

I will quickly go and try and dig a photo out for you.

Tha ks ludoctro that be fab id like to see.

Yes vets happy with weight sbe also said its hard to shift the ravehorse look but the judges likes him to i am hapoy to continue.

It can be hard to loose the racehorse back side and some times I think it can depend upon the build and conformation of the horse as well as the work and feed it is doing.

Re doing the quarter markers etc - if you struggle to get it right, watch and ask someone doing it at shows.

It is an art to use them to enhance a horse's looks as opposed to just prettying the horse up.

Stencilled quarter marks look awful, I would rather not see them and especially not if they aren't accompanied with sharks teeth.

I have been judging for 25 years.

A flea comb really helps for the 3 straight lines, and I stand on a really tall box and hover over to line them up perfectly on either side. Then shark's teeth are just swooping brushes against and then with the coat, and a long brush down the back to smooth it off.

I don't know, and it's hard without the context of the whole horse. The second photo showed a horse who was competing at BE100, finishing the XC without breaking sweat within the time. He's certainly not obese, or even chubby, and I am fairly positive that none of the other horses in the class were either :)

A flea comb is really the only way to get nice looking quarter markers, and ones that will suit your horse :)
Your guy would look better with a few bigger, but less, checkers.

There are plenty of good videos that will show you how to do sharks teeth, it's pretty hard to describe!

Although you can practice them now, I really wouldn't be using them in competition until he is in his full summer coat.

What did you use to do the sparkles? They are great :)

We used silver hair spray - we also had it in blue and pink too, we got quite creative! We also had 4 leafed clovers for one game in blue glitter, can't find the picture but they looked brilliant!

Edit : just found this one of blue and silver from last season too! Excuse the hideous clipped tail, not my doing, it has now grown out and been pulled!

Brilliant, thank you. Off to eBay I go for some hairspray!!

If you can look at the photos of showing winners in HH magazine. The turnout and type is usually pretty smart and correct, and will give u some ideas of what to use on different types.
Echo above, quarter marks are a nono until horse has sleek summer coat. They're all a bit late this year.
Might be stating the obvious, but a beautifully plaited mane and cleverly trimmed and pulled tail will emphasise good points far more than any quarter marks. If you're not already a plaiting and trimming expert do practise these skills too, they really help!

These are quarter marks I did last week with a mane comb, body brush and a little bit of baby oil mixed with water. They stay on really well then. Even on a clipped coat as I did winter showing and always looked smart. I only learnt last year, got a top showing groom to show me.
I stand on a chair for the top bits. Then for the sharks teeth I stand behind the horse( obviously you need to trust the horse your doing it on!!)
Anyway here's the piccie.
