Hello all,
I’m looking to purchase an AQH within the next year or so, so I thought I best get researching the best way to get one in the UK.
I know there are some breeders of AQH’s in the UK, and if anyone could recommend any that would be great, but from the research I’ve done so far, if I was looking for a horse that had already started it’s ridden career, I would be better off importing, as the breeders I have seen only have young stock for sale. I would like to have something that I could ride English and western, but wouldn’t mind it only being western trained that I can bring on English.
If anyone has any info on breeders/horses for sale/cost of import/AQH’s themselves etc all advice would be very appreciated. Thank you!

There are a few ridden ones up for sale at the moment. Lee Rutter has a nice one he's based at Oakridge Arena.
There's one in the Dorset who is 10, late-backed but fully reining trained. I can't remember which Facebook site I saw it on, but I'll update the post if I find it again.
A friend has a big 16hh pleasure/hunter under saddle type up for sale.
AQHA UK has a sales page https://www.aqha-uk.org/Cms/Spaces/PUBLIC/Current+sales
I'd recommend joining the Western UK Facebook groups, as that's where I see most of them pop up.
JM Horse marketing on facebook is also one to follow/watch.

Import is going to add probably 10k to the price and horse prices are much higher in America than here so that might be a non starter…

There’s a lot of really lovely AQHAs in Germany which has a huge western scene and is a lot easier to visit and import than the US so that might be an option.

But I’m in a few western FB groups and there’s broken ones for sale most weeks, I don’t think it’s as hard to find as you’d think. Definitely join as many online groups as you can and get the word out that you’re searching.

Also, have you considered the high percentage QH breeds like Appies and Paints to widen your field or are you set on a QH?

Thank you so much for your help! Importing was definitely going to be a last resort for me, and I had no idea there were as many western Facebook groups as there are, I’ve joined a couple more now so I’ll keep my eye out. It’s good to know that there is a larger broken QH market than I realised ! Thank you!

I realise that the type 2 PSSM test is controversial but having had a QHxTB who was really horribly symptomatic to the extent that he collapsed under saddle without warning, I would consider testing. Or make sure that the parents have been tested (although I have read on a PSSM FB group that sometimes breeders send in hair from the wrong horse to get a clear result).

You could try a wanted ad on the QH pages I got lots of responses and I was more looking for a hacking/mountain horse than strictly a western QH.
