This came up in conversation today, and as I hadn't heard of it I thought I would ask

If you had a foal who lost mum, or was weaned early but still needed milk, (for growth) can you feed powdered baby milk (for example, SMA ) if you had no supply of other milk?

I did a search here and found a couple of posts going back some time, which mentioned it and curiosity has got me

Or, if you had underweight horse old, put a scoop in the feed?
I remember when we rescued a mare, we used milk pellets to build her up, is it the same sort of thing?

Random question, but boredom sets in

Why would anyone want to feed a foal human baby milk? I wouldn't dream of doing it, but maybe others do. Just go buy some foal milk replacer surely?

Maybe cos it is cheaper?

I know when we got milk pellets, the tub was around 60/70 quid.....

From what I read on here, a lot of people do, so curiosity got me

quotes: When things got really bad a year ago she added baby's milk powder to her boy's feed and that did the trick.

I used to get out of date baby milk powder when I had one to build up

edited to add the bits I found!

apologies for that sentence, gremlins took over and it makes no sense!

I think * (because it was a few minutes since I wrote it and I can't remember!) I should have typed....

Maybe they are similar in composition? I don't know if there are any huge differences in human baby milk versus foal milk; however I tend to stick to foodstuffs designed for the specific animal.

Agree with Tia, foodstuffs for each breed! More expensive of course, but why would you want to risk a horse's health by giving it human foodstuff?
