Hello

Wondered if you guys can enlighten me. i've posted on Soapbox that we are go get 4 new horses on the yard this week, 2 of which are 'entires'. they are not stud horses, but potential race horses that just haven't been cut.

Our yard is a mixed racing yard / livery yard, with all sorts of horses / ponies etc...

the field the entires may be turned out in, is behind my mare's stable. the plan is to put them in with YO's retired race horse (gelding). my mare will generally be out in the day but may see them from time to time.

I'm wondering if she will notice, and if she does, will she be in constant season?

anyone have experience of this type of situation?

cheers
Bx

There are 2 stallions kept on my yard. The owner turns them out in the school, which is next to where mine is stabled. TBH I haven't noticed any difference in how often she comes into season.
I've found it's been more upsetting for the stallions when she walks past them in the summer - they get giddy, but she hasn't really bothered. In fact last year I was schooling whilst he brought a mare into the school to cover, which I was a bit concerned about, but my mare didn't take any notice.

It is not common for the mare to be "in constant season" just because there is a stallion about. So long as the fencing is safe & high & she is not in a feild next door, there should not be a problem. Both the stallions I have used have been kept on mixed yards. Sponeck was stabled next to geldings but there were mare in stables opposite, it never caused a problem. He did not cover at the yard anyway, he would be taken to Leckhamstead stud for that!

Friend's mare is at a professional eventing yard where there are two stallions. No obvious signs of distress by either stallions or mares, and they are all stabled in the same complex.

Our next door neighbour has a stallion and a couple of colts. They are often turned out in the paddock next to my mares (although safely separated with post and rail, hedging and two sets of electric fencing). Doesn't seem to affect my mares adversely at all.

I have a stallion who is housed close to the mares. He isn't any trouble and the mares don't come into season any more than they normally do. The biggest issue with having the stallion around is that the mare, when they are in season, become the biggest tarts ever!

I worked on a racing yard and we had stallions, mares and geldings on the same yard with no problems at all from the mares. We were careful which ones we exercised together, as funnily enough it was the stallions and the geldings that seemed to cause most hassle. Turnout was individual of course, but again, no trouble from the mares.

We have a stallion on livery hereand he is in his own paddock with electric fancing - he's not next tomares as I don't see the point in asking for trouble! Buthe's stabled next to mares and there are plenty of mares coming and going and he's fitted in very well here so witha bit of planning it can be done!

We also have a field of 2-3 year old colts who are again kept well away from mares to avoid temptation...!
