I'm planning on visiting Exeter Horse Sales next week (weather permitting).

I've never been before, so I'm not really sure how it all works.

Does anyone know what time viewing starts?

is here !!

op.

the horses can start arriving from 9am, but generally 10am onwards it gets busy, you can ask to see a horse trotted up and there is a pen to see them ridden in,

all the terms etc are on the cat, which is now online... presume you have seen it??

just aword of caution... a lot off iffy dealers sell iffy horses there, under several names, be careful if you a sales virgin.

oh and you can also go to the office and ask to see a horses passport..

Thankin you, that is just the information I was after.

I downloaded the catalogue today and didn't know if the times shown were for viewing, or the start of the sale.

I'm leaving the wallet (and trailer) at home, and keeping my hands in my pockets all day. Just going for a looksee really, while I have some time.

hehe lots of people there offer transport;);)

sale starts at 1130,

the tack sale is worth going to, that starts around 1000 and goes on most of the day.

you go to the office to get a number and have to pay a tenner deposit.

and the brekkie... you must have a brekkie lol.

i shall be there.. but have another forum member coming down from cornwall the night before, i feel the brekki will be a hang over cure...

LOL deffinatly brekkie, and if your planning on spending time watching the sales take something to sit on, else your end up with a very numb botty... the seating is concreat steps..:D:D

Ahh yes, cold, wet, concrete and human flesh; not happy bed fellows. I have been warned (thank you DD).

HAHA first thing I thought of!!!! Take a cushion and avoid the bird poo on the LHS.. you will get all excited and see a lovely area where nobody else is sat, you will gallop up there, see the poo, and everyone else will give you a knowing nod!! HAHA

How are you going to stop your head nodding??

Hmmm, not thought about that.

I'd better not scratch my nose, touch my face, or in fact make any type of movement at all. Plus, I'll wear dark glasses, so that the auctioneers do not think I'm looking at them.

I wouldn't mind a few of the horses in the catalogue, but knowing my luck I'll accidently bid on a Shetland

They were going for £20 quid each last night, thats like the same price as a takaway, silly not to smuggle one in your car?

Well, that was interesting.

There weren't that many lots, I left after about 25 or 30. I was especially taken by a lovely chestnut TB called Winston (Lot 44). I saw him being put in the pen and he was pretty upset and confused. He was still pretty sparky when he went through the ring and only made £420, which was a bargain.

Cob types seemed to be doing OK, but the absolute bargains were two (unrelated) Sec D's, a 5 year old 15hh gelding with a really nice temperament (Lot 29) made only £320  and an equally nice and very calm 10 year old mare (Lot 50) £500.

My heart went out to a couple of oldies, an 18 year old 16hh shire cross mare, who looked totally confused and had obviously been pulled from the field this morning made only £250 and poor Charlie (Lot 70), a 15.3hh chestnut TB x, 13 year old (and the rest) made only £100.

Best price was Tiny, a 17hh (?? didn't look that big to me) really friendly hunter / cob, 12 years old, made £1500, with several 15hh plus cob types making over £1000.

One thing I had forgotten was that it's half term, so lots of mums with lot's of children. Plus a few dealers, that I assume are always there.

If I am ever in the market for another horse, I will take another look at Exeter, as it is deffinately a cheap place to buy, just as long as you keep your eye WIDE open

Oh yes, I took something to sit on, just as well and the concrete was pile inducing to say the least.

Breaks your heart.

30 went for £180 and 31 went for £380.

These two were obviously a pair, so there will be a few issues there later, plus 31 had a really nasty split or crack in one hoof. Neither had had shoes on for quite a while, but that doesn't really mean anything.

Doped ones? They weren't wearing saddles by any chance were they? As I saw a few that looked very 'relaxed' given the circumstances.

I left after Lot 70, as I'd seen the one's I wanted to.

Post was meant to say diy shoeing. I only go for the tack auction but can't help going to see the ponies, it does break my heart, some of them look so sad. Our cob Kelsi came from Exeter sales, we didn't buy her from there. I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to take the risk.

can u find a decent bargain at horse auctions like this? was browsing the catalog for this most recent sale and the prices from the previous sale, and they seemed very low for the types of horses on offer!!

opinions pls :D

This was my first visit, so a little difficult to draw a conclusion. Depends what you are looking for, there was only one or two 'show' ponies there and no other competition types, but as I said £1500 was the top money, for a really nice 16.2hh (listed 17hh) hunter type who I would happily have taken home and the Sec D's were also very cheap.

You really have to keep your eyes peeled though especially regarding age and height.

I guess each sale is different and you just need to look at the catalogue before the sale and decide if there is anything there for you.

EDIT: K1975: Oh yes the shoeing! I said to one lady that it looked like a cob had borrowed someone else's shoes!

First thing I looked at, in every case, was the feet.

Personally, I went to see the 17 handers...and there weren't any :D

thanks NeilM thats really helpful. so do people there exaggerate height and knock a few years off ages? i'd be looking for an allrounder type around the 15-15.2 mark. and are there problems with doping there?? saw a post further up suggesting there was. ive only ever bought a youngster from 'out the back' of the new forest sales, so would be a little new to all this! thank u :D
