my cob is on 16+ D+H and he seems to be overly fizzy on it. hes only been on it since sunday, but he is normally so placid. i know the food could have caused it but wanted feed back on it.

thanks.

Funny you should mention that, i was having a conversation with a work collegue about 16+ ( iw ork with horses) and he said its one of the fizziest mixes going he used to feed it to high level dressage stallions on it. Apparently they just all the high energy cererals in it to help with weight gain, lots of oils aswell. He even said its so fizzy that you can notice the difference in a couple of feeds. Hope this helps you a bit. :)

thank you :) anyone want a free bag of D+H 16+ mix??

ETA: anyone know the ingredient in it which makes them fizz? so i know what to look out for. and if anyone can recommend a good feed that will keep his weight on but NOT fizz him up. baring in mind hes a laminitic!

One thing i wouldnt put him on is conditioning mix/nuts they have quite high barley contents, not good for lamitis, if you wanted a mix you could try d&h pasture mix, i havnt tryed calm and condition but heard good things, or you could try alfa a or alfalfa with a basic pony nut. Are you having trouble keeping weight on due to hard work?

nope. he is soon to be retired. possibly at the end of the year. hes 17 and in the 9 years we have owned him, we have never had a problem with his weight. hes a fantastic good doer but he hasn't wintered well and for the first time he struggling to keep the weight on! he hasnt had a lami attack in ages so really dont want to trigger one!

So if i red right, D&H 16+ mix makes horses very fizzy?? x[/QUOTE

Yes apparently so the thoght behind making the food was that an old horse would be retired living out so the energy would be used to help with weight, but obviously people dont just chuck horsesout at 16 must of them are still in and working or semi working, so they get given this food and they blow there tops on it, maize and peas are actually worse than oats and i think all 3 are at the top of the ingredient list!! :)

Thanks, my welsh cob is 16 and some days is like a 3yr old TB then sometimes to laid back. He went to a show the other day but just had no energy so was looking in to a food that would give him some more energy but not a feed that will make him go stupid.

Do you think D&H 16+ would suit him? x

Oh ok, well probaly the alfa rather than the mix i would say. Although its quite hard for me to say without knowing him! I suppose sugarbeet is a no no with his laminitis. You can get alfa a oil which i found wonferfull for condition. And ad-lib hay but im guessing you know that already. Yer as somebody else said worth ring a feed company for advice. I know baiely do a good range of stuff, but would definalty avoid condtioning mix/nuts as this has contributed a lami attack my sister little pony quite a few years back.
What about the feed balancers theres quite a few on the market. :)

What is he on at the moment, to be honest im more of a fan or straight feeding pont nuts then using either oats ect as an adding for extras least you know what your giving them. But if i were you dont just put him the highest energy food straight away do it gradually you might find something in the middle works aswell without him blowing his fuse. :)

You may even find the alfa oil gives him a bit more of a spark. Going from the food that hes on i wouldnt jump straight into giving the 16+ straight away its a big jump and they usually have more energy in the winter if there stabled more. You can go to one extreme to another!! Its hard for me to recommend foods on here ect as i dont know your horses, how fit, how much work ect you do. But have been told the 16+ can blow the fuse of the quietest of horse:eek:
I always think its better to have something slightly quieter than you would want rather than unrideable/ unmanageable!! :)

But i wouldnt rush into anything just yet, if hes going to be in more and probaly less riding as the dark nights draw in:( you might find he gets a bit of energy back!! :)

Thanks, you have been a great help. He has been ridden 6 sometimes even 7 days a week at the moment but off 2 college next week so will be going down to only a few times!! I will have a look around at some other feeds first and take from there. I always introduce new food gradually as my boy does get gassy ocassionally so must take new food, etc with him slowly.

Thanks once again, you have been a great help. Hopefully he will get some energy back when winter comes :D x

Op, I would have a look at the winergy range if I were you. I'd also give them a call. Both my two are on winergy and are doing amazingly on it. I think it's reasonably lami safe too but I would check that with them. My two are on growth at the moment and are really level headed but certainly have kept their weight well, they are just getting over a virus so would normally drop weight really quickly. Hope this helps, feel free to pm me any time :)
