Hello,

I wonder if anyone has ever fed grass blocks? (Dry, in small haynet) as I'm wondering how long I should expect them to last my (rather greedy!) 16hh horse.

Thank you

Mine likes them. He gets one at night with his haynet, a treat ball and a big trug of mixed oat straw chaff and grass chaff. There is usually a little bit of something left in the morning, and he is much happier than he was this time last year when he was just getting a haynet and constantly moaning about being hungry. On its own it doesn't last long, but as part of an array of different types of forage it seems to do the trick.

This multi pronged attack is the only thing that works for mine too! I soak hayblocks as well and mix them with straw chaff. It makes a big tub trug full so the greedy cob thinks hes getting a massive feed, when actually its chopped hay and straw

Fat Appaloosa demolishes the Halley's one in 10 mins. If too dry she drops mouthfuls in water bucket to soak first.

Big Ardennes will happily nibble all night.

Mine has one a day (simple systems lucie brix)

It prob lasts him 20-30mins but he loves them and it means I can get in field without being hassled by a hungry pony.

Different brands are worth trying

Equiblox are a straightforward basic type block, the cheapest I have found and very compact, being compact and not particularly thrilling to taste they tend to last longer than most, my ponies will pick at them on and off for hours and they give a nice second focus of interest when it comes to eating so encourage 'grazing' habits as much as you can do in a stable

Other blocks are more loosely constructed, Agrobs are one of these sorts but they small amazing and the ponies are far more enthralled to eat these, they vanish in about 30-40 minutes

If you drop a block in to a bucket of water and let them go soggy this can take a pony longer to eat, this horsey Pot Noodle can last for hours again depending on the tastiness of the block itself
